Roots to Revival, Revival to Roots

"For everyone on different levels, [the Smithsonian Folklife Festival] is a reminder of the variety of culture, and the variety of human expression.  From awareness, to acquaintanceship, familiarity, deeper knowledge, immersion, and profound personal connection, people have a range of experiences with culture, their own or of others.  This festival is an opportunity to move along that spectrum, whether through a touching performance, a child's handcraft, or a shared beer and conversation."

Join us this Sunday for ACTA's Roundtable Series' Food is Good for You: Foodways from a Cultural Perspective
g
Come to the traditional arts table!  We will meet on Sunday, October 13, at Urban Adamah, a farm in the middle of Berkeley whose practices are guided by Jewish agricultural values, and where 90% of the food is given away.  We will tour the farm and think about the centrality of food in our lives from a cultural perspective.  How is food a portal to memory?  How does it figure into storytelling?  How is it used in a sacred way?  How do foodways and indigenous knowledge intersect?  And who is not seated at the proverbial table of nutritious food because of access issues?

Performing Diaspora Symposium Podcast Now Available
g
In August of this year, at CounterPULSE in San Francisco, leading scholars, elders and artists from across the Bay Area and nation gathered for a series of thoughtful and challenging conversations that contextualized the intersection of traditional arts, contemporary performance, and California's changing demographics.  ACTA Program Manager Lily Kharrazi served as an invited curator for this symposium, drawing on her vast experience at ACTA over the past 8 years.  Podcasts of the symposium are now available on CounterPULSE's website.

ACTION ALERT! Online Petition to Tell Congress: Don't cut funding for the arts and arts education
g
Our current government shutdown -- which has closed the doors of federally-funded museums, parks, zoos, and delayed the distribution of National Endowment for the Arts grants that enrich our communities --  is only a snapshot of what a proposed 49% budget cut to the NEA could mean for our communities.  The Alliance for California Traditional Arts and Americans for the Arts invite you to sign a petition telling Congress you oppose the drastic cut to the NEA.  Please sign the petition by October 31, 2013, and help us protect the arts in America.
