 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #222
Demonstrate Results of "Non-Teamwork"

Another simple suggestion that you can develop and apply, adjust to your own context and needs so it can work for you:

This idea utilizes the Opposite Extreme creativity tool to help team members experience a paradigm.

To creatively demonstrate the point on the importance of teamwork, find ways to demonstrate it by limiting or disallowing teamwork for a limited time.

  • team buildingChoose a task that the team is accustomed to performing together and limit the members' ability to communicate and coordinate their effort as they normally would.
  • You may choose to let the team know what you are doing beforehand, or use the element of surprise and only later share your true intentions.
    • If you use the element of surprise, make sure it is not done in a punitive way.
    • The element of surprise approach should only be used with teams who are basically sound.
  • In any case - make sure you discuss and analyze the consequences of:
    • not being able to work as a team on the performance of the team;
    • the atmosphere in the team;
    • the feelings of individual members
  • Remember to choose a single task for this demonstration; do not block the team members' ability to work together on multiple tasks. This is just to let the team experience and discuss the importance of teamwork.
