 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #218
Staying Steady when Funding Falters

conversationA leader shines brightest when he/she can effectively model to staff how to remain calm in the midst of chaos. Being the person you want your staff to be is the single most important thing you can do.

In addition, to help your staff through these difficult times, consider:

  • Make communication a higher priority than usual. During challenging times, communication is more vital than ever. Staff needs to hear from you, and they need it more frequently.
  • Communicate positively. Staff do not need sugar coating, but they do need news delivered in a positive way -- and delivered with hope. Do not just give the message "we're lucky to have a job;" though sometimes that's very true. But that message damages morale and loyalty.
  • Keep communicating the vision. Help staff stay focused on why they are here; what the desired outcomes are. Otherwise, they will just focus on the problems. Focus long-term. "This too shall pass."
  • Educate. Give all the information you can give, in a timely manner. This helps staff make informed decisions which they have to make. What people don't know, they make up. And made-up information is usually negative.
  • Stay value-driven. Hold true to the foundation of the organization; don't just follow the wind. Remember that you can lose some battles, and still win the war.
  • Ask the question: What one thing can we work on right now that will make the most difference? Then focus on it; work on it.

Challenging times come and go -- but the leader that can 'stay steady' in the midst of the challenge will not only excel as a leader, but will help all those who follow to become greater employees, helpers, and future leaders!
