Sugar Lake Lodge, Grand Rapids, MN

An invitation to all Women of the NE MN Synod of the ELCA to "Live in the Spirit"!

Our Keynote Speaker (Friday) will be Alison Feigh, who serves as the program coordinator at the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center, a program of the National Child Protection Training Center. Alison has been tackling the problem of missing and exploited children for over a decade-providing education and support to families and communities.

Thursday workshops include timely topics such as "Refugee Resettlement", the new LSS bible study "My Neighbor is Muslim", "Grief", and "Life, Humor, Motherhood, Personal Development and Spirituality".

New this year - You must register separately for the Gathering and Housing/Meals. Please make sure to complete and submit both forms to the appropriate person(s).

Registrations postmarked after May 13th must include a $10 late fee.

+Bishop's Visitation to Confirmation Students

Bishop Aitken continues to invite you to do a Visitation/ Teaching/Anointing on a Wednesday night (or whenever you meet) for your Confirmation Class. He encourages parents to come that night as well so he can meet them and include them in the teaching time. Pastors and Confirmation teachers are welcome of course to be there, but he will teach about Christian Vocation, the role of the Christian in our world, our call in Christ and end with Communion and Commissioning for service with Anointing oil from Palestine. It's best to gather a cluster of congregations for this - that has worked well in the past.

Peer Ministry Leadership Training Camp
August 26-28th
Camp Vanasek, Baxter, MN

We will be trained by Lyle Griner of Peer Ministry Leadership.

Peer Ministry Training

A 12-hour training, plus four coaching sessions with a key leader, for adults responsible for equipping and supporting student leaders, plus key high school youth who help build enthusiasm and an infrastructure for continuing PML leadership groups. Plus one pre and three post coaching sessions.
  • KICKSTART pre-training - One-hour phone or Skype session. Remove yourself from being the middle-person, allowing others to hear and ask questions first hand. Get your team together! Your inside fan club, a few key adults and youth who want to know, and who will help others to be in the know! Our experience? Participation at trainings has gone way up.
  • TRACTION COACHING post-training. - Training continues in three phone or Skype sessions with key leader(s) spread over three to six months. This is your insurance that PML does not become another dusty three ring binder on a shelf! We will work on sharpening your training skills, plus help you put successful strategies together that fit your student leaders in your ministry plus, help you manage your new adult and youth leaders.
  • COST: $2,600 Share your training and the costs with one or more other churches! (Includes housing and food at Camp Vanasek) The more participants we have the less it works out to be per/person (25 participants = $160)
WHAT?
No lectures. No power points. No white boards. No smoke machines or laser lights. This is a face-to- face, learn-by-doing, skill-by-skill experience. You learn PML skills by entering into life and faith experiences with everyone in the room.

A circle of chairs, engaging exercises, working in pairs, a series of life sharing conversations as you use the skills you are learning, deepening faith, and yes... always fun.

We work through at least seven of the sessions in the curriculum. We also work on facilitating skills, planning, practical uses, and next steps for your ministry.

WHO?
You and your adults who train and mentor high school Peer Ministry Leaders. Your key youth, who will leave excited, wanting to motivate others, ready to serve!

WHY TRAINING?
You can only teach what you live. People learn from people, modeling and mentoring these skills. That is why we work with adults and kids. The curriculum and training is amazing, but the real learning will come when you and your leaders live what you teach!

More information:
"My Neighbor is Muslim"

Dear Minnesota Lutheran Pastor,

Here at Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, we have been inspired by churches, community groups and secular organizations who have embraced the opportunity to build relationships and learn more about their Muslim neighbors. Because of courageous church leaders, the "My Neighbor is Muslim" small group study is now being used all over the country!

"My Neighbor is Muslim" has served as a beginning educational resource, but there is more to be done. In response to Christ's command to love our neighbors, we encourage you to consider engaging with your Muslim neighbors by following the links below:
We have also discovered a need for educational resources for young people in faith communities. In recent months, incidents of bullying based upon religious grounds has increased in schools throughout the country. We need strong messages of acceptance and Christ-like love to counter hate and discrimination in our communities.

We are so pleased to introduce a lesson plan and activity guide for youth directors and confirmation leaders called "Loving Our Muslim Neighbors," authored by Sarah Kretschmann of our Church Partnerships and Philanthropy Department. The curriculum is available for FREE download. The lesson plan includes education about Islam as well as an activity guide for a service project and a mosque visit. We encourage you to share it with youth leaders in your church!

We thank you for your heart for your neighbor, and we look forward to launching another resource discussing racial equity in time for your fall adult education. Thank you.
