I had the opportunity this summer to visit the World War II sites of the D-Day Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Near Utah Beach, there is a monument to "those who led the way on D-Day." At the back of the statue is one word: LEADERSHIP. If you know anything of the D-Day invasions, you know that when just about everything went wrong from the strategic plans, it was the leadership of the soldiers on the ground who were able to work on the fly and secure the beaches despite all the odds. Most of the Divisions had trained for their role for over a year, up to 14 hours a day. They knew their part - and the responsibilities of everyone else in their group. They clearly knew their goal: take the bridges, secure the beaches. When things went awry, their training kicked in to take up the responsibilities of those who had fallen and to adapt to the situation in order to achieve the goal set before them.
I was with a ministry colleague on this trip, and we couldn't help but make the comparison to youth ministry. How many times have your plans gone exactly as planned? I've been in ministry for 24 years and I don't think I've ever had an event go exactly as planned! When people are involved - especially kids - the unexpected happens and you need to adapt on the fly to achieve the goal set before you - be it an event or a simple conversation. That is why I believe leadership development for all adults in youth ministry is so vital. Volunteers and staff in the trenches need to be prepared for the variables that come our way. We need to clearly know the goal of passing on faith. We need to be equipped to know the nuts and bolts of our role...and the bigger picture of how theology, theory and practice fit together. This is leadership. Moving forward despite all the odds, because you trust the training that has equipped you and the God who empowers you, and you know the goal of accompanying young people on their faith journey is well worth the investment.
I cannot encourage you strongly enough to invest in leadership development this coming year - for yourself, and for your teams (Sunday school teachers, confirmation guides, mission trip leaders, caring adults...). Consider taking part in two upcoming Practice Discipleship trainings:
Check out the trainings from Youth Leadership, Peer Ministry Leadership, Vibrant Faith Ministries and more. Details are below and on our website. How will you grow to move forward in ministry this year?
