Pathway Cords
Notices were sent out to students eligible for a pathway cord.  If you think you are eligible and didn't receive a notice please come by the Career Center.  The Pathway Cord Packet is online or in the Career Center and is due 4/22/15.
NEW CTE Pathways
In addition to our ROP courses where students can earn a cord for completing a career pathway, we are excited to announce NEW Career Tech Education pathways in Digital Arts and Engineering.  Counselors have all the latest info.  Registration is taking place now.  Sign up for the Fall!!
College & Career Center Bulletin Gets a Makeover
Dear Parents, Students and Faculty,
      Welcome to our new, Catching up with the College and Career Center, e-newsletter format.  We are attempting to increase communication and make important information like Scholarships, College Visits, Career Center Events and Important College and Career Info more accessible and frequent. You can expect bi-weekly e-newsletters to come your way.  We value your input and would love to hear what you would like to have included in our e-newsletter.  Email us by clicking here.
February is Community College Month
Upcoming Community College Events
  • Community College Week, 2/23-27 (Sign ups in Naviance)
  • Senior Preview Days (Golden West, 3/5  & OCC, 3/10) (Signups begin @ Community College Info Night)
  • Math Pre-Test 2/25 Rm 153/154
  • Community College English and Math Placement Prep Classes & Testing, 3/16 (Sign-ups for Prep Classes and testing will begin @ Community College Info Night. Prep classes are not mandatory to participate in Testing)  
    • English Prep Class-3/4 @ 2:30 Rm 750
    • Math Prep Class 3/9-12 @2:30 Rm 351 (you will be notified which math class to take from your pre-test results)
       Several Community College Reps including Cerritos, Cypress, El Camino, Fullerton, Golden West, LBCC, OCC and Rio Hondo, and Santiago Canyon were on hand @ Community College Info Night to answer questions about applications, financial aid, majors, and transferring.  Our keynote speaker from OCC gave an overview of the Community College process.
     During Community College Week students will have a chance to sign up with the Community College of their choice and hear a more in-depth presentation from a Representative.  Sign up via Naviance under "College Visits."  New colleges added weekly so check often.
    Senior Preview Days allow students to get first hand experience on a Community College campus.  First come, first serve so get your field trip slip turned in to the Career Center ASAP.
     English and Math Placement Testing (Assessment) is a necessary part of the Community College enrollment process.  Golden West will be hosting testing on our campus but the test may also count at other colleges. Call your school's assessment office to ensure the testing is transferable.  The Math Placement Pretest takes place 2/25 and is mandatory to participate in the Math Prep Classes 3/9-12.  English Prep Class is scheduled for 3/4 and lastly, the actual placement test will take place 3/16. 
REMINDER!!!!!-You must apply to Golden West to be entered into the placement test regardless of whether you plan on attending there or not. 

What You Need to Know:  Financial Aid

FAFSA
The Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open.  The FAFSA must be completed before Cal Grant eligibility can be determined. 

CAL GRANT
The deadline to apply for the Cal Grant is March 2nd.  Our Career Center team has uploaded the Cal Grant GPA Information Release Forms (the form turned in at registration.)  Many of you have already received notification of your eligibility.  If you haven't already done so, please turn in one to the Career Center ASAP!   Be sure to include the student SS# for the form to be valid. You may also track your Cal Grant Award at Webgrants4Students.  You may qualify for the Middle Income Scholarship and should hear something in the summer if you do. 
Mentor Breakfast:  A Huge Success!!
Over 200 students were lavished with valuable advice on how to get started and succeed in their chosen career path.  Industries such as Healthcare, Business and Engineering were represented with over 60 mentors in attendance.  We were honored to have Matt "Money" Smith as our Keynote Speaker who imparted his wisdom and experience which included 1) Reduce distractions, 2) Manage your time and 3) Learn how money works.  Food was donated by The Marketplace Grill and Cafe and dessert by Yogurtland.  Thank  you to all of the PTSA Members, ASB and National Honor Society students who helped with all of the arrangements necessary to make this event a success.
SAT Prep Class
LAEF ( Los Alamitos Education Foundation) is sponsoring an SAT Prep Program that will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.  Class will meet most Saturday mornings in Rm 153/154, from 9am-noon until the day of the test on May 2, 2015.  The book is available for purchase for $20 (The Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd Edition) during class.  Here is the letter that went home regarding the class.  A suggested donation of $90 to cover the up-front cost of facilities and materials is requested and can be dropped off at the College and Career Center by Friday, March 3rd.  All Checks should be made out to LAEF-Los Alamitos Education Foundation.
Rotary Student of the Month
Tristan Larison is the January Student of the Month and is currently enrolled in Principles of Engineering where he is doing an excellent job! His teacher Mr. Reimer says, "He is attentive, involved, and thoughtful working with others." 

Jade Kaiser is our February Student of the Month and is doing a fantastic job in our ROP Video Production class (Griffin News).

 

Jade has played a major role in Griffin News's success this year! Her teacher Mr. Tomlinson says, "Jade has been instrumental in ensuring episodes are ready to view by our deadline by putting in countless extra after school hours to perfect them."  Way to go guys!

This will also count toward job shadowing for a Pathway Cord in Human Services.  Here are the details:

4/18/15 from 12-4 PM.

Operate the food and game booths.  Stay for all 4 hours or split the shifts in half if needed, and/or help us before and/or after for set-up and clean-up.
