Art Auction - September 18
GNHCC to sponsor Art Auction Fundraiser in Hamden

Greater New Haven Community Chorus (GNHCC) will host an art auction on Friday evening, September 18th at The Commons Great Room, 75 Washington Avenue in Hamden, CT.

The auction will feature art in all media and price ranges.  Attendees may preview the pieces for auction beginning at 7:00 PM while enjoying a reception of hors d'oeuvres accompanied with a cash bar.  Auctioning begins at 8:00 PM. The auction will be conducted by art auctioneers from Marlin Art, the oldest art auction fundraising company in the Northeast. The experienced Marlin auctioneers create a comfortable, low-pressure atmosphere, putting even the most inexperienced bidders at ease.

Selections presented for bid at the GNHCC Art Auction may include works by: Agam, Alvar, Borelli, Boulanger, Brodinsky, Chagall, Delacroix, Fazzino, Ghambero, Gorman, Haenraets, Kun, Lena Liu, Robert  Lui, Moses, Neiman, Patchell-Olson, Rockwell, Rothenberg, Schluss, Shvaiko, Tarkay, Wissotzky, Wooster-Scott, Wyeth, Zule and many others -plus sports memorabilia!
The event will also include door prizes, a silent auction, and entertainment - and will conclude with a dessert reception. Tickets are $25 per person or $40 per couple and are available from GNHCC members or click here

Proceeds from the event will benefit GNHCC (501c3), in support of its commitment of making quality music accessible and approachable for audiences and members alike, always striving to 'build community one note at a time' through music.

As a non-auditioned, all-volunteer chorus of approximately 100 voices, GNHCC relies on the generous contributions of its supporters at fundraisers like this Art Auction to ensure continued success well into its second half century.

Sing with GNHCC!Sing

You (yes YOU!)
are invited to sing with GNHCC!

Do any of these comments sound like you?
  • I sang with a chorus back in high school and I really miss it.
  • I sing in a church choir, and would love to take my singing skills up a notch.
  • I enjoy singing holiday music and it would be fun to sing more than just traditional carols.
  • I want to sing with an ensemble that's serious about great music-but also makes rehearsals fun and friendly.
Search no more!  From September 3-17, during our open enrollment period, you're invited to attend up to three of our Thursday evening rehearsals to experience what GNHCC is all about.  Then, when you decide you love singing with us (and we're sure you will) you can choose to become a member of GNHCC --no audition required -- provided you join by the end of our open enrollment period, September 17th

We rehearse every Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:15 PM at the First Presbyterian Church at 704 Whitney Avenue in New Haven.  We sing, we laugh, we socialize and, often, we make life-long friends in the process.

Throughout the Fall, we will be preparing for our December 12th concert, Holiday Collage, which will be performed at Battell Chapel on the Yale campus.

So join us, and experience for yourself what GNHCC is all about!  See you on September 3rd.  For more details visit the 'Singing with Us'  section of our website.
A Busy Summer for GNHCC's Board and Artistic Team

In June, thanks in part to a generous grant from the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven,
Artistic Director, Noah Blocker-Glynn, Board President, Kathy McManus, and Marketing Chair, Susan Conover were privileged to attend the annual Chorus America conference.

Held in Boston this year, the annual conference provides a unique opportunity for chorus leaders to exchange ideas and consider fresh, new approaches and best practices.  Workshops focus on fine-tuning administrative processes and developing new approaches for engaging audiences and singers.  Attendees were also treated to concerts by the Handel and Hayden Society, the Lorelei Ensemble, the Boston Gay Men's Chorus, and others.

In July, GNHCC's incoming Board Members joined their returning colleagues for a Board Retreat and planning session focusing on preparations for the Fall season and for the upcoming Art Auction to be held on September 18th.

As September
approaches, Artistic Director, Noah Blocker-Glynn and his Artistic Team are preparing for the September 3rd start of rehearsals for GNHCC's December 12th concert, Holiday Collage.

The repertoire for this holiday potpourri will include audience favorites:
  • Gloria by Vivaldi
  • The King Shall Rejoice, one of the Coronation Anthems by Handel
  • The Twelve Days of Christmas, arranged by Bob Chilcott
  • Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson
  • Plus works by Lauridsen, Gawthrop and Olofsson
If you'd like to sing with GNHCC in this fun concert, see the 'Sing with GNHCC' section earlier in this newsletter.  But, even if you're not able to sing with the chorus this Fall, be sure to save the date - December 12th - for this vibrant concert.
Beth Stevens Named
2015-2016 Scholarship Recipient

GNHCC is pleased to announce Elisabeth (Beth) Stevens as its newest Choral Conducting Assistant.  As the 2015-16 Ronald D. Kontechy Choral Conducting Assistant Scholarship recipient, Beth becomes the 6th recipient of this invaluable program for aspiring conductors.

Beth is no stranger to GNHCC.  An accomplished Soprano, she has been singing with the chorus for the past four years and has sung a number of solos in recent concerts.  Beth is currently the choral and general music teacher at East Haven High School and the East Haven Academy. She is also the music director at Stony Creek Congregational Church in Branford. Beth recently completed her second year of summer classes towards a Master's degree in Music Education with an emphasis in Choral Conducting at the Hartt School of Music/University of Hartford.

Looking ahead to her time as GNHCC's Choral Conducting Assistant, Beth said, "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to extend what I've been learning at Hartt in the coming year while working with Noah and the chorus!"

The Ronald D. Konetchy Choral Conducting Scholarship Program is funded and administered by GNHCC.  It provides mentorship from the Artistic Director along with invaluable experience "on the podium," real-world experiences conducting a large chorus, and extensive opportunities to hone score study skills, rehearsal techniques, and more.
And the Winner is...
Fran Pierson (r), receives the
Chloe's Castle Quilt
from GNHCC member,
Jill Savitt (l)

On June 11th, GNHCC drew the winning raffle ticket for the beautiful 'Chloe's Castle' design quilt-handmade by talented quilters from within the GNHCC membership.

The lucky winner was Fran Pierson, of Guilford. Fran is a Library and Media Specialist at the High School in the Community in New Haven.
