May 27, 2015

In a few weeks we will be winding down our 51st year - another successful year for GNHCC due in large part to all of our supporters, and the dedication of our members.

In September, we welcomed several new singers and Jessica Nix, our Choral Assistant and GNHCC Ronald D. Konetchy 2014 - 15 Choral Conducting Scholarship Recipient.

In December, we joined with the Christ Church Choir in Guilford in our annual Choirs for a Cause Concert, raising money that was donated to the Wounded Warrior Project and the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund.  Also that same month, GNHCC was joined by the Primi Voci treble choir of Connecticut Children's Chorus and performed a wonderful concert at St. Mary's Church in New Haven featuring Dan Forrest's Requiem for the Living with chamber orchestra.

In January, we participated in the American Choral Directors Association International Conductors' Exchange Program and were visited by two wonderful choral directors from Sweden.

In early May we were fortunate enough to have the support of so many of you as we participated in the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven's THE greatGive - a 36 hour online nonprofit giving campaign that helped us raise the necessary funds to continue our mission of bringing choral music to the greater New Haven area and to continue "Building Community One Note at a Time."  We are truly grateful for your generous and thoughtful support.  Without you, our gift of making music would not be possible or complete.

But, the year is not quite over yet.  We are not quite done.

On Saturday evening, June 6 we will be performing our spring concert - Songs of Sanctuary.  The concert will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Haven and feature choral music by composers and arrangers that include Haydn, Jenkins, Whitacre, Hogan, and others.  We hope you can join us on that evening.

And finally, we have been invited by Edgerton Park Conservancy to perform at their 50th anniversary celebration in mid-June.

50th Anniversary Celebration on June 14

    Edgerton Park Greenhouse

GNHCC has been invited by the Edgerton Park Conservancy to participate in its celebration of Edgerton Park's Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration on Sunday afternoon, June 14.

A green space jewel set on the Hamden and New Haven border, Edgerton Park has been a part of the New Haven parks system since 1965.  The 25 acres making up Edgerton Park were given to the City of New Haven in 1965 by Frederick F. Brewster.  Eli Whitney was the original owner of the property.  Edgerton Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

GNHCC's performance is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM in the park and admission to the event is free!  We are excited about the invitation and looking forward to giving back to the community with our choral program as a part of this special celebration!

GNHCC Call for Singers -
Fall Semester Starts September 3

GNHCC's fall semester rehearsals are scheduled to begin on Thursday evening, September 3 at 7:00 PM.  Two hour rehearsals are held every Thursday evening at First Presbyterian Church, 704 Whitney Avenue, New Haven.

Registration fees are $50.00 per person per semester ($75.00 for couple of same household).  Fees are collected at the beginning of each semester and are non-refundable.  Member registration fees must be paid within three weeks of the start of each semester and may be paid by cash, check, or PayPal.

Our season consists of 2 semesters, fall and spring.  We perform two major concerts each year:  a concert in December, and a concert in late May or early June.  In addition, various 'Preview Concerts' and community performances are frequently scheduled prior to our major concerts.

Participation each semester in a one day retreat is encouraged to help build choral skills and to provide an opportunity to socialize with other members of the chorus.  Chorus members are also encouraged to share individual skills with the GNHCC to help fulfill its mission.

A strong commitment to performance excellence is expected and there are opportunities for small ensemble work and solos by audition, including the auditioned GNHCC Chamber Choir.

Greater New Haven Community Chorus consists of approximately 100 voices and draws its membership from throughout the greater New Haven area.  GNHCC strives to embrace the wide diversity of the community and is committed to making quality music accessible and approachable for audiences and members alike.  Greater New Haven Community Chorus was founded in 1963 as a venture in community singing and continues to perform with pride and distinction.
