Spring has finally arrived -- and it was a long time coming! We've been busy at GNHCC during our spring semester preparing for our upcoming concert -- Songs of Sanctuary on Saturday, June 6. We even recently held an all day retreat where we focused on preparing the music we will be performing at that concert. Details and ticket information can be found below, along with some photos of our retreat.
In addition, we have some other upcoming events that we will be participating in that we want to share with you - including the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven's THE greatGive and the Edgerton Park 50th Anniversary Celebration.
And finally, we have an update on the GNHCC 2012 - 13 Ronald D. Konetchy Scholarship recipient, Matthew Cramer and some of the wonderful and outstanding things he has been up to. |
GNHCC to Participate in THE greatGive
on May 5 - 6
|

Greater New Haven Community Chorus will once again be participating in the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven's THE greatGive, a 36 hour, online giving event at giveGreater.org on May 5 - 6.
Last year, we raised over $15,000.00 during this event. The generous donations from our supporters, an additional prize for the largest number of new donors, and an anonymous donation matching the amount raised during the first few hours of the event, all contributed to GNHCC's success -- thanks to many of you and your valued support.
As a nonprofit organization now in its 52nd year, we rely heavily on the generous support of our families, friends, and followers to fund the many activities of the group - including the gift of sharing music right here in our own community of greater New Haven. Please consider making a donation during the 36 hour period starting at 8:00 AM on May 5 and ending at 8:00 PM on May 6. We rely on you and are always grateful for your generous and thoughtful support as we continue with our mission of "Building Community One Note at a Time."

GNHCC Scholarship Recipient, Matthew Cramer to Continue Choral Conducting Studies at Yale
Matthew Cramer (The Hartt School '13), GNHCC's Ronald Dean Konetchy Choral Conducting Scholarship recipient of 2012 - 13, has recently been accepted at Yale, as a student of both the School of Music and the Institute of Sacred Music. Matt will be working on his Master's Degree in Choral Conducting.
Recently, Matt has been singing with Chorus Angelicus & Gaudeamus in performances of John Rutter's music, including his Requiem; and with VOCE and the Cathedral of Saint Joseph Schola Cantorum. In addition to singing, Matt has premiered some of his new compositions - most notably revelation canticle for vocal octet based on texts from the Book of Revelation, which was performed by the NY based group Khorikos at Hartt.
Most recently, Matt was selected to participate in a workshop offered through the Weill Music Institute of Carnegie Hall where, along with 35 other pre-professional singers from around the world he worked under George Steel, former director of NYC Opera and Peter Philips, founder and director of the Tallis Scholars. The group prepared and performed the culminating concert of Renaissance Master Works alongside the Tallis Scholars at St. Ignatius of Loyola in NYC on Friday, April 17. In the New York Times Music Review dated April 19, 2015, music critic James R. Oestreich hailed it as "Simply beautiful" ... "the sheer waves of sound had tremendous effect in this excellent acoustical setting."
In the next few months, Matt will have a second performance of his composition Veni, by the Senior Choir of Chorus Angelicus directed by Gabriel Löfvall. The piece was originally performed by the Greater New Haven Community Chorus' treble choir at their recent fall concert.
Matt will also be participating in concerts with the Hartt School Choirs and Orchestra featuring Haydn's Paukenmesse. With VOCE, he will be involved in the recording of their third CD, "Music of the Spheres." Matt's early Music ensemble, Voce Concitato which he founded with three friends, is planning a June concert in Hartford which will likely feature light madrigals on themes of spring. The group has given performances throughout Connecticut and in Pennsylvania. In October of 2014, they presented a session at the CT-ACDA Conference, and participated in a masterclass with the Western Wind Vocal Ensemble. Matt and the other three members of Voce Concitato are looking forward to more performances and recordings in the coming season.
During the summer, Matt will be at the Berkshire Choral Festival in Sheffield, MA, participating as a Conducting Apprentice. Featured guest conductors this summer at BCF include Erin Freeman, Jane Glover, and Phillip Brunelle.
In addition to receiving a Bachelor of Music Composition from Hartt in May 2013, Matt has also been working on a Graduate Professional Diploma in Music Composition at Hartt over the past two years, studying with Gilda Lyons and David Macbride. During this time, he has written choral music that has been performed by the Hartt Chamber Choir and Hartt Camerata, orchestral music for Foot in the Door - Hartt's contemporary music ensemble - and incidental music for the Hartt Theater Division's production of Caryl Churchill's TOP GIRLS.
Additionally, he has begun to explore electronic and electroacoustic music. Two of his short sound pieces were selected for inclusion in ArtsSounds' 2015 "What if in KC/CT?" at the Kansas City Art Institute. Initiated by faculty from the UMKC Conservatory and the Kansas City Art Institute, ArtSounds explores cross-media expression through creative concert-making.
Over the course of 2014 Matt participated as bass soloist in the CT premiere and recording (to be released late 2015/early 2016) of Brian Coughlin's Requiem, a collaboration between NYC-based new music group, the Fireworks Ensemble, and the choirs of Chorus Angelicus & Gaudeamus.
Matt has performed on numerous occasions with GNHCC in concerts performed by the chorus and GNHCC Chamber Choir. And now that he is studying at Yale, we look forward to hopefully seeing more of him. He is always welcome.
Bravo, Matt!!!

Come out and visit your GNHCC friends at the Historic Wooster Square Association's 42nd Annual Cherry Blossom Festival -- Sunday, April 26, 2015, 12:00 N. - 5:00 PM
If you are interested in singing with us next fall, or would like information about some of our concerts and events, some of our members will be there to greet you and answer all your questions.
This celebration of spring commemorates the planting of 72 Yoshino Japanese Cherry Blossom trees in 1973 by the New Haven Historic Commission in collaboration with the New Haven Parks Department and residents of the neighborhood. The Festival has grown from a modest event with a local band entertaining a handful of neighbors under lighted trees to a major New Haven all-afternoon event that draws well over 10,000 visitors.
