March 8, 2014

We are counting down the days.  Twelve days until the start of spring, and 84 days until the GNHCC 2014 Spring Concert!  It has been a long, cold, somewhat miserable winter.  It is tied as one of the 8th coldest on record, and is about to be recorded as the coldest winter here in 35 years.  But that has not stopped us from planning and preparing some exciting and fun events.  Or, prevented us from rehearsing for our Spring Concert.  Take a look at some of the things we have planned and please consider joining us as we end our fifty year anniversary celebration.   Our specially commissioned Voices of One is sure to warm your heart!

2014 Spring Concert Tickets Now on Sale!

Discounted advance tickets are now available for our 2014 Spring Concert!

We would like to invite you to sing the Finale piece with us. It is a familiar tune - How Can I Keep from Singing, arranged by Gwyneth Walker.  It exemplifies the very reason why GNHCC exists and will be our powerful greeting to "The Next 50-Years".  If you would like us to provide you with the sheet music for the Finale Sing, please be sure to provide us with your email address when purchasing tickets and we will send you a PDF file of the music!

The Importance of Rhythm in Singing
by Chelsea Tinsler

Rhythm is the foundation of music! Try singing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star without a steady beat. It may sound interesting, sure-but it just doesn't feel right! Rhythm provides the basis of the structure for music and gives energy and forward motion to pieces we love. Think of the Hallelujah Chorus with the propelling of the orchestra and timpani behind it! Without the driving rhythm, how powerful would Handel's Messiah be? Just like the pulse of our own heartbeat, we have an innate understanding of rhythm and are drawn the pulse of music!

As a percussionist, I am always searching for new ways to count, hear, and feel rhythms. Are you looking to deepen your own understanding of rhythm and independence with counting? Join me on April 2, from 7 - 9:30 pm to experience Ritmica: A Unique and Intuitive Approach to Rhythm.

The Ritmica system has really helped me develop my own skills, and does not require a lot of music reading experience-just some hands to clap, feet to stomp, and voices to chant and sing!

Our Commissioned Piece -- The Story Behind It -- The Winning Photos

Steeples of New Haven
 ~ Ingrid Staecker

Our commissioned choral work, Voices of One -- will be the culminating artistic effort of our photography and poetry contests, used to inspire the piece composed by award-winning composer Jake Runestad.  The theme of both contests and the commissioned piece is "What I Love About New Haven."  The commissioned work will be performed at our 2014 Spring Concert on May 31 to celebrate our 50th anniversary season.  Danielle Poulin, Ingrid Staecker, Dominic Percopo, Alaina Driscoll, and Francesca Martin were the winning photographers in different categories. Submitted photo entries were required to  capture and visually express the essence of New Haven's culture, scenery, entertainment, and lifestyles as seen through the photographer's camera lens.  Click here to view the winning photos.  The winning poems that are the inspiration for Voices of One will be featured in the next newsletter.
