Special Thanks

Energy is a proud recipient of the Magnet Schools Assistance Program

Energy would like to thank IPAA/PESA for all of their support! For those parents who don't know, IPAA/PESA is one of our major supporters. They work very hard to secure of funding, plan guest speakers, and plan our field trips. So a huge thank you to IPAA/PESA for their unending support!
Students had a great time throwing pie at their favorite teachers as part of a fundraiser for the student Costa Rica trip next Spring. Our dedicated teachers jumped at the chance to help our students raise money for the trip.  Thank you to all those who participated!
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Our Student Spotlight this week goes to 9th grade student Efrain Vaquera nominated by Ms. Estrella. "Energy students, looking for a high-quality and easy-to-work-with partner? Efrain Vaquera might just be the partner for you. Efrain is a unique student for many reasons. Other than the fact that the order of his nitrogenous bases is different than yours (science jokes!), he is mature beyond his years. Efrain is the type of young adult that gives you faith that our future is still bright. Whether he ends up becoming the chef that he aspires to become, or finds himself in any other wide variety of careers, I know that he will be successful."  Efrain's favorite class is Ms. Estrella's biology course because, "she really relates and connects with all of us. She teachers different than any other teacher I've ever had.  Her class is hands on and she relates it to my life."  Efrain's true passion is culinary arts but he knows the knowledge and curriculum at Energy will prepare him for whatever career path he chooses.  "Energy is different from other high schools because of the many privileges we have here. Our guests speakers have really impacted me.  Mr. Norman Augustine is someone I aspire to be like.  Someone who is very successful and has done lots of things, but also has fun!"  Efrain we are sure with that attitude and work ethic you are going to have a great future ahead of you!

Countdown to Summer Dance

The PTSA sponsored dance, Countdown to Summer, was a great success last Friday!  Students definitely came ready to dance away any exam stresses and worries.  A great time was had by all who attended. A very big thank you goes to Mrs. Maltbia and her parent volunteers who helped to make this event possible!

Ten80 Expo and STEMfest

Last week Energy students were invited to attend the TEN80 STEMFest. Students had the opportunity to attend workshops about the engineering and entrepreneurship pieces of solving a community challenge. Then they put their knowledge to the test and pitched ideas to the TEN80 staff. They used their strong PBL skills to come up with some creative ideas!  A huge thank you to Ms. Garcia for organizing the event for our students!
SAVE THE DATE

Be sure to make plans to attend our first ever student exhibition and charity event. Sophomore art and chemistry students have been preparing for the event which which display students art work as well as a "Restaurant Wars" themed evening with proceeds benefiting the Houston Food Bank. Sophomore chemistry students have been creating health conscience recipe books using only ingredients one would typically find at a food bank.  Teams will compete for best cookbook item and overall restaurant theme.  It is an event you do not want to miss!  Tickets will be sold the day of the event and will be available for purchase with cash only.
Awards Ceremony
This year's Student Award Ceremony has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th at 6:30PM.  Parents, please save the date!

All parents and family members are invited and encouraged to attend. Students who will be receiving an award will be given a specialized invitation prior to the evening of the event.

We look forward to seeing you there to honor our hardworking students!

FANTASTIC LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Summer is just around the corner, but it's not too late to find a great summer experience or volunteer opportunity.  The following programs are still accepting applications.  Apply today!

TIRR Memorial Hermann, one of the leading rehabilitation hospitals in the US is seeking individuals, who have a passion for rehabilitation, to volunteer at the Texas Medical Center location in Houston.  TIRR Memorial Hermann specializes in transforming lives that have been significantly altered by an illness or injury.  Their comprehensive rehabilitation includes inpatient and outpatient treatment for stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, and neurological and neuromuscular disorders plus recovery from complex orthopedic injuries.

Volunteers must commit to working 1-2 days a week, 3 hours each day for a minimum of 3 months.  Volunteers must be 16 or older, complete an application, and pass a criminal background check.  For more information visit TIRR Memorial Hermann Volunteers

We're inviting you to apply for an internship with Sylvester Turner's campaign for Mayor. The campaign is looking for bright, energetic individuals who want to learn the nuts and bolts of how a campaign works and help elect the next Mayor of America's 4th largest city. This is your chance to get involved in local politics and make a difference in your community.

Hours are completely flexible with a small requirement, and the Sylvester Turner for Mayor team is a lot of fun. No experience is necessary, and you will walk out the door at the end of the internship knowing how to run a local field program, as well as having connected with community and political leaders from across the country.

Additionally, the campaign is offering a fellowship program for applicants who are looking to take their involvement to the next level by committing more time to the campaign. Fellows will participate in our Field Organizer Training Program, where they will not only learn the basics of campaign field work, but will also gain in-depth knowledge of grassroots organizing so that they are ready to work on, and eventually run, campaigns of their own in the future.

The Sylvester Turner for Mayor internship and fellowship programs are designed to be enriching educational experiences, where participants will engage in daily field activities, learn from and have access to seasoned campaign staff, and hear from a variety of political guest speakers.
