Energy is a proud recipient of the Magnet Schools Assistance Program

Energy would like to thank IPAA/PESA for all of their support! For those parents who don't know, IPAA/PESA is one of our major supporters. They work very hard to secure of funding, plan guest speakers, and plan our field trips. So a huge thank you to IPAA/PESA for their unending support!

(pictured above) Chemistry students with Ahmed Haque of Rice University.  Ahmed is a senior Biomedical Engineering Doctoral student at Rice University and the President of the Rice University Coalition for Hunger and Homelessness.

Tenth grade Chemistry students invited the Rice University Coalition for Hunger and Homelessness to visit Energy and share more about their organization as part of the research process for their current PBL. The meeting was completely organized and led by students.

To study colonization and imperialism in World History, Mr. Tate created a simulation where a foreign nation had taken over Texas and made it their colony. Students formed resistance groups (each with their own name and logo) and they worked to drive out the foreign power and make Texas independent. Each move the students made either strengthened or weakened the resistance movement. Students succeeded when they utilized tactics that have actually been successful in world history. In the simulation, students used boycotts and sabotage to attack the economic interests of the foreign power (that had invaded to gain control of Texas oil production). Students also were very successful doing peaceful demonstrations, using social media to promote their cause, and gaining support from other nations. Students tried many other methods, including espionage and military action, and in the end, they won and Texas became free once again!
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
written by: Fernanda Reyes and Audreanna Robinson

Our Student Spotlight this week goes to 9th grade student, Claire Craig, who embodied the spirit of Energy. She was nominated by Ms. Finch for "Hard work, dedication and her ability to take leadership and help her classmates." We asked Claire what inspires her to succeed and she said, "I have very big shoes to fill, my dad is a successful engineer and my mom is a mathematician. I want to become a great engineer one day."  Claire has been an integral part in the development of student culture on campus.  She founded the Energy Spirit Club to help promote and spread Energy support and pride in our school.  Claire has organized fundraisers and recruited student spirit leaders to volunteer at Student Ambassador events and serve as positive and friendly faces to our many visitors.  We are very proud to have such a dedicated student and ambitious student.  Keep up the hard work!

ENGINEERING SHARK TANK

Last week our freshmen Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) students participated in "Shark Tank Rewind" Finals. The top 6 teams battled it out to proclaim throne as the Shark Tank overall team. Each team had to update their prototypes based on prior corrections from the judges the week prior during the Semi-Finals. The instructors solicited two of the former judges to come back out to hear the changes to the products. The judges for the presentation were Mr. Ben McMillan; an Architect Firm Owner (IDG Architect Firm), Ms. Jeannie Briggs; a Retired Teacher, Ms. Suzanne Varughese; Chemical Engineering Student, and Mr. Noah Rattler; Physics and Mechanical Engineering Graduate.  Thank you to all those who volunteered their time to make Shark Tank such a successful event!

Congratulations to the following teams:

1st Place: Visioneers
2nd Place: Attar Enterprises
3rd Place: Teal Inc.
