Energy is a proud recipient of the Magnet Schools Assistance Program

Energy would like to thank IPAA/PESA for all of their support! For those parents who don't know, IPAA/PESA is one of our major supporters. They work very hard to secure of funding, plan guest speakers, and plan our field trips. So a huge thank you to IPAA/PESA for their unending support!
On Tuesday, February 24, Mr. Lamb & Ms. DeLaRosa's World Geography/English I students took part in an interactive simulation of global trade. Each team started with an unequal distribution of 'natural resources'; in this case, paper, pencils, rules, and scissors. The goal of the simulation was to earn as much money as possible, by creating precisely measured shapes and presenting them to a commodity trader who bought (or rejected) each shape. In this engaging activity, students quickly began producing goods (the shapes), trading, buying and selling resources, and generally immersing themselves in a variety of economic activities. Students experienced the great benefits to wealth which arise from bountiful natural resources, and the struggles which accompany a lack of these resources. Afterwards, classes took part in a discussion drawing parallels to resource-rich (such as the US) and resource-poor (such as Mali) countries.
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
written by 10th grade students Fernanda Reyes and Audreanna Robinson
Our student spotlight this week is 9th grade student Anthony Solano. He was nominated by Ms. Estrella for being "an optimistic student that goes above and beyond in learning. He's motivated, willing to work hard, and collaborates well, and always has a good attitude."  These are characteristics that Energy really values and hopes to develop in all of our students.  Anthony says, "My love for science and engineering and the motivation from my teachers drive me to do my best." Energy is proud to have such dedicated students such as Anthony. Keep up the good work!
NEPRIS INDUSTRY CONNECTION

Last week, the Introduction to Engineering Design students in Dr. Hall and Mr. Mendoza's 3rd period classes were given the opportunity to have a virtual conference with Ms. Lynn Lyon, from Pioneer Natural Resources Company, based in Dallas. This conference was made possible through the Nepris website where they connect teachers and their students to professionals from around the world based on content. The students asked questions by texting them in with a code and receiving responses from the expert on the spot. It was incredible to see industry and education collaborate in such a meaningful way. The students have already started to ask for another virtual experience and are incorporating this new tool into their research process.
BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS OF AMERICA

Students attended their first state leadership conference in Dallas last week.  They participated in leadership development seminars, served as interns, and competed in spreadsheet applications, word processing, presentation management, and video production competitions.  On top of that students networked with student leaders from across the state, visited the Dallas Aquarium, and saw their first snowfall!  The event was a huge success thanks to the hard work of club sponsor Mr. Alanis, the dedication of the students, and the support of all those who donated to the club over the past month!  We are looking forward to participating again next year!
FANTASTIC LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Energy Explorations Academy for 9th grade students will allow students to perform experiments in Rice University's undergraduate chemistry laboratory and have learning experiences in different areas on campus.  Topics will include fossil fuels (chemical energy) along with alternative energy (fuel cells, solar cells).  The academy will include 3 field trips (Ocean Star Oil Rig Museum, Wiess Hall at Houston Museum of Natural Science, Schlumberger tour) along with an exploration of seismic data in Rice's new 3D visualization lab.

The program is free to students and is only open to students Energy Institute and four other HISD schools.  The program is held at Rice University, June 15th - 26th from 8:30am-3:30pm daily.

The deadline to apply is April 17th.  Visit www.rstem.rice.edu/energy to submit your application.

Tune in here each week to learn of amazing opportunities available to students outside the classroom either for weekend or summer enrichment.

Camp STEM Prep aims to increase the number of minority students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  Camp students will be exposed to lectures, labs, and field trips targeting two statewide industry clusters: 1) biotechnology and life sciences and 2) petroleum refining and chemical products.  Additionally, the program will address issues critical to preparing for STEM college degrees and careers.  The application is due March 6th.  For more information check out Camp STEM Prep!

Atlas Scholars provides students with an experience that exposes them to financial markets and the energy industry, while offering the opportunity to gain experience through having meaningful responsibilities and valuable mentorship.  By working with strong leaders in their respected fields, the program instills in each students the core values necessary to push them to become the leaders of tomorrow.  The 3 year long mentorship program includes one month summer internships each year.  The program is open to interested 10th grade students.  Applications are due March 27th.  For more information visit Atlas Scholars.

This fantastic learning opportunity is open to 9th and 10th grade female students.  Now in its 19th year, Girls' Leadership Worldwide, is one of the most distinguished leadership development programs for teen girls. It is an interactive, very diverse, transformational summer program for young women, that unlocks their potential to become great leaders in their communities and beyond.  Scholarships are also available to participate in the program, so be sure to apply by March 16th! Visit Girls Leadership Worldwide to learn more and to download the application.

Sophomore student, Timothy Chung, has been working hard all semester preparing for an extraordinary summer!  He has recently been accepted into The Woods Geology Program at Yellowstone and Youth About Business at Columbia University.  Both programs have two week summer sessions that Timothy will be participating in starting this July.

The Woods Geology Program at Yellowstone is a program geared toward student leaders with an exceptional interest in science ready for a spectacular adventure in Yellowstone Country!

Youth About Business at Columbia University is a chance for high school students to solve real business issues with leaders at real Fortune 500 companies. Students participate in Basic Camp where they build leadership skills and critical thinking by tackling problems at the boardroom table with a business team of students from across the country. Students explore the merger & acquisition process through the mentorship of accountants, lawyers, business leaders and more. They live on a university campus. Successful teams will be invited to the Wall Street Conference where they will visit premier business and financial institutions and leaders in Manhattan, New York.

For both programs, Timothy submitted applications shortly after Winter Break.  But it is not too late to apply and take advantage of the many fantastic learning opportunities out there.  Spring Break is a great time to work on these short applications and line up some exciting summer plans!
