Special Thanks

Energy would like to thank IPAA/PESA for all of their support! For those parents who don't know, IPAA/PESA is one of our major supporters. They work very hard to secure of funding, plan guest speakers, and plan our field trips. So a huge thank you to IPAA/PESA for their unending support!

Last week in World History/English 2, students immersed themselves in the sociopolitical order of feudal Europe. Class monarchs were appointed, who in turn selected Nobles and Knights of the class.  As in Europe, though, most students played the role of peasants.  After harvesting their "crops" (candy in this case), peasants were forced to give more and more of their hard-earned wealth to those above them on the social hierarchy, who sat back and watched their piles grow. It was a fun and memorable experience that gave students first hand exposure to the power of feudal hierarchy.
Student Spotlight
Our student spotlight this week is Emanuel Perez, a 10th grade student nominated by his Chemistry teacher Mr. Diosomito.  Mr. Diosomito nominated Emanuel because of the strong work ethic he has observed in Emanuel throughout the first semester. "Emanuel is a quiet but great student. He has shown promptness, excellence, and honor in his academic work," said Mr. Diosomito. Emanuel loves math and science and came to Energy because his desire to design and create.  He says he has been given the opportunity to work on some really innovative projects that have allowed him to work creatively to solve problems. What Emanuel likes most about Energy is his teachers whom he says, "are very interactive and approachable.  They work with students and work extra hard creating lessons and projects that make class fun." Keep up the great work Emanuel - you are a wonderful example of what it means to be an Energy student!

HAPPENINGS AT ENERGY

The 10th grade Eaton Field Trip
was a great success!  Students participated in a college readiness activity with Lonestar College and toured the Eaton facilities which included various engineering lab mock ups and demonstration areas.  Eaton is a global technology leader in power management solutions that make electrical, hydraulic and mechanical power operate more efficiently, reliably, safely and sustainably.

EMERGE:
Saturday, January 10th, Energy students Matthew Brack,Timothy Chung, and Gerardo Escobedo participated in their first Emerge session to begin preparing to apply to Tier 1 universities across the nation.  Students will be traveling to visit Ivy League schools this summer and will be assigned a college mentor to help them prepare for the application process and for success in college upon entrance into a Tier 1 university.  Click here to learn more about EMERGE!

The TESLA Club is hard at work preparing a STEM Challenge they will be hosting for HISD middle school teams.  Middle schools are being invited to send 2 teams of 5 students to participate in a full day of STEM competitions, Quizbowl challenges, and various STEM related exercises. The TESLA club is hoping to share their passion for STEM with middle school students across the district and get them excited about their future high school opportunities.  The Tesla Energy Challenge Bowl will be held at The Energy Institute High School on March 7th.  For more information email the Tesla Club sponsor Mr. Diosomito at mdiosomi@houstonisd.org.

"
Teens for Jeans" jean drive sponsored by the Recycling Club is continuing this week.  Students are encouraged to donate gently worn jeans without holes in them by placing them in the Recycling bins located in front of the display cases outside the main office. Remember our goal is to collect 300 pairs of jeans!
