Students worked on interactive technology reviews last week and this week to prepare for exams! Ms. Ratliff's World Geography class particpated in team competitions reviewing important content for their exams! |
Candido Rodriguez Zelaya is a talented creative student who works hard in his AP Spanish Language class to analyze critical topics developed in Hispanic politics, economics, social and cultural environments. In his recent projects, Candido integrated technology to develop awareness of the products and practices common to Hispanic culture and use them towards his designs, political debates and essays. Candido also spends his Spanish tutorials researching beyond the class topics and initiating discussions with Mrs. Sola to perfect his skills in his Spanish Language. According to Mrs. Sola: "I am proud of students like Candido. He works hard to not only master the skills that he needs but to also handle discussions addressed in class with respect and a thoughtful opinion that provides new solutions and points of view to the issues that we address in class".

We are very excited to announce that three of our students were selected to participate in the Emerge program! This is a fantastic opportunity for these students. Matthew Brack, Timothy Chung, and Gerardo Escobedo were chosen to participate in the HISD Emerge program that prepares talented HISD students from under-served communities to successfully attend and graduate from the nation's top colleges and universities. For more information visit HISD EMERGE. Congratulations to Matthew, Timothy, and Gerardo! |
WORLD AFFAIRS ENERGY SUMMIT |
10th Grade Student Timothy Chung representing his team during the Council discussions.
Thirty 9th and 10th grade students attended the World Affairs Council Energy Summit at the Boys Scouts of America headquarters in Houston last week. Prior to the event students prepared by reading 5 industry related articles. Teams were then formed to represent the United States, EU and Ukraine, and Russia, China, Japan. It was an excellent opportunity for students to understand current energy issues on a global scale and to debate modeled conversation representing their country. A big thanks to our teachers Ms. Ratliff, Mr. Lamb, Mr. Tate and our STEM coordinator Mr. Flores for planning, organizing and attending with our students. Our students did a wonderful job competing against upperclassmen from across the Houston area. We are excited to participate next year! For more information on the World Affairs Council click here.

Freshmen Biology students wrapped up a 3 week long PBL on a 3 objective cell project designed to answer the question: "How can we determine if the material found in meteors in San Antonio is a cell or a virus? " After watching an entry event in which they were tasked as Energy Institute students to determine what the material was and to prepare a press conference to inform the public, students participated in workshops, critical friends, and labs to prepare for their final presentation.

This week students will be taking semester exams. In order to prepare for exams each class has participated in a semester review. Many teachers are offering extra credit for completed review assignments. In order to help your student have a great finals week:
- Check each course review with your child.
- Be sure they are getting a good night's rest.
- Eat breakfast each morning.
The bell schedule above is for the rest of the week. Dismissal is at 2:00 Monday and Tuesday. Dismissal is at 12:30 Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Students are not dismissed until those times.

Can you sponsor a classroom?
Energy teachers spend countless dollars towards buying supplies for cool projects and even just buying pencils so all students have writing utensils every day. Let's help our teachers restock some of their supplies! Teachers have been asked for some inexpensive items they would put on a holiday wish list. We are looking for some families that would willing to sponsor an anonymous teacher from our list. Requested items include things from dry erase markers and pencils to soccer balls (I bet you can guess which teacher asked for those!). If you are willing and able to sponsor a teacher's wish list (all under $20), please email Noelle MacGregor at nmacgreg@houstonisd.org for an item. Energy appreciates your kindness and support!

Energy's First Annual Winter Dance was a huge success! A big thanks goes out to the PTSA who organized and sponsored the event! Students were excited to spend a relaxing evening together!
