Energy would like to thank IPAA/PESA for all of their support! For those parents who don't know, IPAA/PESA is one of our major supporters. They work very hard to secure of funding, plan guest speakers, and plan our field trips. So a huge thank you to IPAA/PESA for their unending support!

Energy students at the Pumps and Pipes Symposium!  An excellent opportunity for our students to see Project Based Learning being used by Medicine, Aerospace, and Energy professionals to solve problems faced today in their respective fields.  Check our students out on the Webcast recorded throughout the event today at Pumps and Pipes.

EXEMPLARY ENERGY STUDENT

Michael Deras, an outstanding student in Mr. Lamb and Ms. DeLaRosa's World Geography and English I Class. A very skilled Geographer and Cartographer, Michael can name and label a map with countries and capitals and knows a great deal of current and historical information about each one. For first, project when studied different regions, Michael's group studied The Crimea. Michael wrote a well-researched short story on a historical character and used his knowledge of the area to fill in many nuanced details. In our latest project, Michael worked in the mindset of a civil engineer to create a new highway systems map in The Bakken Oil play that alleviated the stressors on the limited highways of western North Dakota. By creating loops, toll roads, and bypasses to the already exisiting system, Michael showcased his imagination and creativity in a well-thought out and practical solution.
OFFICER AVALOS SHARES MESSAGE OF PEACE
Energy's Officer Avalos proudly represented HISD and The Energy Institute over the Thanksgiving Holiday organizing and participating in a community fundraiser to support families in need. Officer Avalos serves as the Houston Chapter President of the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA).  In this role he organizes a number of community fundraisers including holiday giveaways and college scholarships.  We are very proud of the work Officer Avalos is doing in and for our community.  Be sure to read the full blog write up here! Latino Police Officers Association shares bounty with needy children
PBL FINAL PRODUCTS
Check out this video from a 10th grade World History/English 2 project called "Hemispheres Collide." Students took on the role of PR agents for various client civilizations during the Age of Discovery. Groups produced PR campaigns including posters and videos that highlighted the achievements of their client civilization before participating in Lincoln-Douglas style debates. The group of Liz Ajpacaja, Jesus Ipiña, David Livingstone, and Brooke McIntosh represented the Inca, and created an engaging "commercial" focusing on the masterful road and city building of the Incas, as well as their skills in surgery and in quipu-based data collection. Hemispheres Collide Video!

Be sure to view this PowToon from a 9th grade World Geography/English I project called "Engineering a Sustainable Community." This project tasked students with analyzing a civic problem created by the shale boom and creating a sustainable solution to that problem. The group of Candido Rodriguez Zelaya, Sage Cade, Khalin Washington, and Sebastian Escoto researched the lack of housing around the Bakken shale in North Dakota, and proposed an innovative solution of affordable, stackable, temporary housing. PowToon: Bakken Housing Project
