TEACHER SPOTLIGHT

Meet Ms. Ann Ratliff!  Ms. Ratliff teaches Pre-AP and Prep World Geography at the Energy Institute High School.  She is originally from San Antonio and joins us after teaching at the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice.  Ann attended Franklin University, Switzerland where she studied geothermal and hydropower technologies.  Ms. Ratliff is most excited about our Project Based Learning curriculum at Energy.  "I think it will be a great way for students to learn how to collaborate and take responsibility for their learning."  Ms. Ratliff has an adventurous spirit, she loves traveling, scuba diving, playing soccer, and spent her summer vacation hiking the Andes from Peru to Bolivia.  We are so happy to have Ann joining us at the Energy Institute - make sure you stop by and say hello!

OTC CHARITY DINNER BENEFICIARY

Energy Institute has huge news! We are so excited to announce that we have been selected as the beneficiary of the 2015 Offshore Technology Dinner.

You can read more information and see the press release by clicking here
OTC CHARITY DINNER BENEFICIARY

The Annual OTC Dinner recognizes the OTC Distinguished Achievement Award recipients, raises funds for a worthy cause, and provides an excellent opportunity for industry leaders to network with colleagues from around the world.

"We are honored to be selected as the beneficiary of the 2015 Annual OTC Dinner. We are committed to bringing students a ground-breaking journey into the world of energy," explains Lori Lambropoulos, Principal, Energy Institute High School.

All classrooms utilize technology which provides teachers with the instructional tools necessary to engage students in a hands-on, student-centered environment. By the time a student completes four years, they will have worked in 150 different groups, on 150 different projects, and given 150 different presentations.

"It is through the contribution of corporations, like those involved with the Annual OTC Dinner, that the IPAA/PESA Energy Education Center is able to support the educational initiatives at the Energy Institute High School," explains Galen Cobb, Chairman of the IPAA/PESA Petroleum Academy Advisory Board.

"The IPAA/PESA Energy Education Center and the Energy Institute High School are committed to bringing students an innovative and fresh look into the world of energy and developing the next generation of talented energy professionals. Starting a program such as this from scratch is a challenge. This award enables us to add to the program and continue the momentum," said Barry Russell, IPAA President & CEO.

ENERGY DAY ESSAY CONTEST

Congratulations to Jose Saravia for winning 2nd Place in the Consumer Energy Alliance-Energy Day Essay Contest.  Jose wrote an original essay entitled "An Energized World" that told the story of Energy through a narrative about a grandson asking his grandfather about the history of Energy.  His unique take won him a second place trophy and a Visa Gift Card valued at $150.00 donated by HESS Energy.  Congratulations to Jose for representing Energy Institute's class of 2018 by placing 2nd in this challenge!  If you would like to read Jose's essay, it is printed below.

"An Energized World" By Jose Saravia

The lights turn on, cars overcrowd the highway and the sky glitters with a light hue of orange. A boy asked his grandpa, "How did we get this far?" "It all started with the sun, it gave us comfort and warmth, and it helped grow the plants and animals we ate, to survive. We used fire, but it took us time to learn how to use it, but once we did, we ushered in the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age. During does 10,000 years, humans created Cultures, towns, music, art and tools."

"Wow!" the boy stated. "But that sounds nothing like today." "Around the early AD's we discovered coal. We still hadn't decoded the secrets a black rock consisting of carbonized plant will control the world up to today. We used coal to create and connected our world during the industrial revolution. During the 20th century, we discovered oil and natural gas it controlled the history of humanity during the 20th century, we flew to the skies, we walked on the moon, and we shrank the world. During the 2000s when I was a child the world was still controlled by fossil fuels.

"Grandpa, are you going to talk about your old stories," the boy said. "A revolution had started, our world was again changed, and we knew our precious fossil fuels were running out, but the question was when. We wanted something sustainable, around the world a shift to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass and geothermal occurred. With it the days of wars over oil and the fear of losing our modern way of life were over. It now powers the world economy, we have huge farms harvesting energy and our whole life revolves around it. All a product of our insatiable need for energy.
