Whither Baltimore and the Catholic Church
Front page of
The Baltimore Sun, June 1, 2015

My Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Faith,

Yesterday morning's front page of The Baltimore Sun carried a banner headline announcing that this past month of May, which has just ended, saw 43 murders in Baltimore City exceeding the record established 20 years ago. The question on everyone's mind, from the Mayor on down, is what to do in the face of the escalating killings that have mushroomed since the beginning of this year and have grown far worse in the wake of the violence that took place in early May due to the death of Freddie Gray.

As a response to the outbreak of this violence and the many murders taking place, our Catholic parish invited Pastor Joshua Smith of Gallery Church, an Evangelical Church in Sandtown/Winchester to speak at a recent meeting of our Pastoral Council. He spoke for an hour-and-a-half about the great hopelessness evident in the lives of the young people of West Baltimore and how we, in collaboration with him and other organizations he works with, might establish an on-going dialogue. From such conversations could possibly emerge some significant interaction between his church community and ours. We plan to work closely with Minister Smith and his people.

In addition, last Monday, 35 of our parishioners joined with me and another 100 people in accompanying our urban Catholic bishop, Denis Madden, on a Prayer Walk around St. Gregory the Great Church in Sand Town for almost two hours visiting five different places where a grocery store had been arsoned, autos had been stolen, a person had been shot to death in his car, a community rec center had been closed, and the corner where Freddie Gray had been brutally accosted leading to his death. We plan to do a Prayer Walk again this month in another part of troubled West Baltimore.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Lori has become directly involved himself by visiting the Catholic churches in Sandtown. He also recently spoke about restoring hope to the city in an interview which appeared in America magazine. (Click here to read). He intends to engage the Catholic Church and his fellow Catholics in seeking solutions to what he refers to as "the two Baltimores."

These small steps are an attempt to begin the healing process and to rebuild our city and its communities. We have a long journey ahead, but we undertake it with trust in God and the hope that these steps will lead to some very fruitful results.

Gratefully in the Risen Christ,

Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

- Wednesday June 3 - Friday, June 11, 2015

The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost.  This year it will be on Friday, June 12.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

It was to Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) that Christ chose to reveal the desires of his heart and to confide the task of establishing devotion to that Sacred Heart. These revelations were numerous, and the apparition that is especially remarkable is that which occurred on the feast of St. John when Jesus permitted Margaret Mary to rest her head upon his heart and then disclosed to her the wonders of his love, telling her that he desired to make them known to all humankind and to spread the blessings of his goodness, and that he had chosen her for this work. He said, "Behold the heart that has so loved men ... instead of gratitude I receive from the greater part (of humanity)only ingratitude ..." and asked her for a feast of reparation on the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi. The mission of propagating the new devotion was especially confided to the religious of the Visitation and the priests of the Society of Jesus. Margaret Mary's spiritual director was a French Jesuit, St. Claude de Colombiere. To read the Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, click here.

The Justice & Peace Committee is dedicated to the service of faith and the promotion of justice.   We are organized through subcommittees that identify particular programs to more effectually:  serve the poor and our focus on hunger and homelessness in Baltimore City;  support Immigration advocacy and projects - at risk children and families; Economic Justice (legislatively advocate a paid sick leave initiative); support justice issues especially impacting women; and advocate for and develop diversity in our community.  We remain committed to organizations working for domestic and international peace and justice.   At our monthly meetings, each subcommittee convenes for one hour from 6:30-7:30 p.m. devoted to developing their own specific agenda.  This is followed by a combined J&P meeting from 7:30-8:30 p.m. during which time projects are presented and a rich, cross-committee discussion of ideas takes place to connect our work and inspires our fellowship and plans.   We invite you to join us on Thursday evening, June 11, in Ignatian Hall.

St. Ignatius Movie Night - "Anyone and Everyone"

- Friday, June 19

Anyone and Everyone is a moving and beautiful portrayal of the love between parents and children, and the work some parents are willing to do for the sake of that love. Connected by having a son or daughter who is gay, parents across the country discuss their experiences in this documentary.

Filmmaker Susan Polis Schutz depicts families from all walks of life. Individuals from such diverse backgrounds as Japanese, Bolivian, and Cherokee, as well as from various religious denominations such as Mormon, Jewish, Roman Catholic, Hindu, and Southern Baptist, share intimate accounts of how their children revealed their sexual orientation and discuss their responses. The parents also talk about struggling with the pain of their sons and daughters dealing with not being accepted by relatives or friends, and being ostracized by religious congregations.

The showing of Anyone and Everyone is hosted by Embracing God's Gifts, the gay and lesbian ministry of St. Ignatius Catholic Community. This group is open to anyone interested in creating opportunities for spiritual growth, fostering support, maintaining communications, and encouraging social activities among diverse members of our parish. At Prayer Walk, Bishop Madden Floats Ideas For Helping West Baltimore

May 27, 2015

"There are so many things you can be upset about," said Giuliana Valencia-Banks, participating in a May 26 prayer walk through the West Baltimore neighborhood of Sandtown-Winchester, "but when you find people doing something like this, you have to show up."

Baltimore Auxiliary Bishop Denis J. Madden leads prayer walks about once a month, but this one - the first since Freddie Gray Jr. suffered fatal injuries in police custody - took on special import.

More than 100 walkers, including priests, religious, local Catholics and other people of faith, left from St. Gregory the Great, located at 1542 N. Gilmor St., and wound their way through the neighborhood in which Gray lived.

They sang hymns and stopped to reflect and pray at points where lives were lost to violence, as well as the place of Gray's arrest, near the intersection of Presbury and North Mount streets.
