Baltimore New Year's Eve Interfaith Prayer Service - 2014
|
My Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Faith:
As we anticipate this coming Sunday's final feast (The Baptism of Jesus) of our Christmas celebrations, our thoughts return to the splendid liturgies of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Epiphany Sunday. These captivating celebrations brought joy and consolation to the hearts of our parishioners and guests who participated in these special Eucharistic liturgical celebrations.
If you would like to watch any of them (view the children's pageant at the Family Mass on Christmas Eve; listen to the homilies of Fathers Bob Hamm, Steve Spahn or Bill Watters; savor the splendid music of our choir and ensemble; or glance at the beauty of our decorated church), you are welcome to click on any of the videos below where each of the liturgies is easily accessible to you and your families.
In case you missed our Annual New Year's Eve Interfaith Prayer Service, that unique event is also being made available by simply clicking on the video at the top of this section. We are fortunate to have a superb video of the whole celebration. If you were not able to attend, this video is an excellent opportunity for you to experience the joyful spirit of this annual celebration: its uplifting music, touching prayers, rich readings, powerful intercessions, and the remarkable sermon of Archbishop William Lori who spoke about our need to reach out and care for and befriend the poor in the same way that Pope Francis continuously encourages us to do. You will also be able to view the religious, civic, and political leaders who participated in the celebration thanking God for the blessings of 2014 and seeking God's favors on 2015. Please enjoy the celebration in all its multifaceted splendor. As the videos were shot in high definition, make sure you give them a few moments to buffer before trying to play them!
Gratefully in Jesus,

Keeping Somebody Warm
|
The St. Ignatius community has been very generous over the years in supporting Viva House, a Catholic Worker House which has served the community in Southwest Baltimore for more than 40 years. Our church community regularly collects groceries which Viva House distributes to those less fortunate.
We have discovered that at this time of the year blankets are in high demand for those they serve, not only for bed coverings, but as buffers against the cold winter drafts that invade their modest dwellings. If you can help, please bring a blanket to Ignatian Hall when you come to Mass this weekend. This will assist Viva House in their distribution on Martin Luther King's birthday. Thank you for your generosity!

Upcoming Events |
Justice & Peace Committee
- Thursday, January 8
One of our goals is to deepen our understanding of the principles of Catholic social teaching and then, through word and action, to help integrate these principles more fully into the life of our parish community. How you can help? By supporting us with your time, talent, and ideas; and expand Saint Ignatius' efforts to new areas. If this sounds interesting and you want to get involved with the parish's newly forming Advocacy Ministries in the areas of Immigration and Economic Issues; or our Education Endeavors and Projects, we invite you to join us at our next meeting on Thursday, January 8 at 7:30 PM in Ignatian Hall. For a copy of our agenda, email the committee chair, Candra Healy for more information.
All are welcome!
Morning of Ignatian Reflection

The program begins at 8:45 in Ignatian Hall. This is an excellent opportunity to take a few hours out of the hustle and bustle of life and to quiet our hearts and center ourselves on what is really important. A great way to start the New Year!

St. Ignatius Movie Night
- "American Promise" - Friday, January 16

American Promise is an extraordinary documentary about race, family and education that's at once epic and intimate. It spans 13 years as Joe Brewster and Michčle Stephenson, middle-class African-American parents in Brooklyn, N.Y., turn their cameras on their son, Idris, and his best friend, Seun, who make their way through Dalton, one of the most prestigious private schools in the country. Chronicling the boys' divergent paths from kindergarten through high school graduation, this provocative, intimate documentary presents complicated truths about America's struggle to come of age on issues of race, class and opportunity.
American Promise is the winner of the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award, 2013 Sundance Film Festival. (View Trailer)
The showing of American Promise will be facilitated by Dr. Lisa Williams (bio ) who is Director of Equity and Cultural Proficiency for the Baltimore County Public School System. Dr. Williams will give a brief introduction to the film, and guide a brief discussion following the showing. There is no charge for this event. Popcorn, snacks and beverages will be provided.
Women of the New Testament
- Tuesday, January 20
The group Women of the New Testament explores the diverse roles of women in the early church by studying and discussing the New Testament, other writings and practices of the early church, and scholarly commentary on these sources. In the light of this process, the group - women and men - pray to discern the roles to which women (and men) are being called in the contemporary church. The group is currently discussing chapters 4,5 and 6 of the book Lost Women of the Bible: The Women We Thought We Knew by Carolyn Curtis James. The next meeting is on Tuesday, January 20 at 7 PM in Ignatian Hall . Please join us. For more information, contact Kay Haddon: retkayhaddon@comcast.net.

Pope Francis' Suggested New Year's Resolutions
Posted on January 1, 2015 by Cindy Wooden
 (CNS/Paul Haring)
VATICAN CITY - When Pope Francis met before Christmas with Vatican employees, mostly lay people with families, he asked them to do 10 things. The list sounded remarkably like suggestions for New Year's resolutions: - "Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are." - "Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, attention and love." - "Take care of your relationships with others, transforming your faith into life and your words into good works, especially on behalf of the needy." - "Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity and worldly decadence." - "Heal wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness, forgiving those who have hurt us and medicating the wounds we have caused others." - "Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, humility, competence, passion and with a spirit that knows how to thank the Lord."
