MARY, UNTIER OF KNOTS, OR MARY, UNDOER OF KNOTS

My Dear Sisters and Brothers:

Our Maryland Jesuit Provincial, Father Jim Shea, SJ, held his spring Superiors' Meeting on April 27th and 28th at St. Mary's Seminary Conference Center. Because it was his last meeting with the eighteen of us, he chose to thank us for our service to him and our fellow Jesuits during his six-year tenure as provincial by giving each one of us a beautifully framed replica of the eighteenth-century Baroque painting of Mary, Untier of Knots. The original work hangs in the Catholic Pilgrimage Church of St. Peter or Perlach Church in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany.

This painting and devotion to Mary, Untier of Knots has become more and more prominent around the world because of Pope Francis. In the late 1980's Father Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ first encountered the painting while he was completing his doctoral studies in Germany. Having spent thirteen consecutive years in his native country of Argentina as novice master, provincial and rector of the Jesuit theologate in Buenos Aires, Bergoglio was "exiled" by his Jesuit superior to work on a dissertation about the famous Italian theologian, Romano Guardini. It was a low point in his life. Upon his return home, he brought back a postcard of the painting. Fostering veneration of Mary, Untier of Knots, Bergoglio promoted the devotion. Gradually the faithful in many places throughout Latin America, especially in Argentina and Brazil, began to show reverence to the Blessed Virgin under the title: Mary, Untier of Knots. When he was archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Bergoglio even had this image of Mary engraved on a chalice, which he presented to Pope Benedict XVI.

The story behind the story of the painting reaches back to the early part of the seventeenth century. Wolfgang Langenmantel of Bavaria was on the verge of separating from his wife, Sophia Rentz. Wolfgang sought help from Father Jakob Rem, a Jesuit priest, who prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary in these words: "I raise the bond of matrimony to untie all the knots and smooth them." Peace was restored between husband and wife. More than fifty years later, Hieronymous Langenmantel, the grandson of Wolfgang and a canon at the Monastery of St. Peter in Augsburg, had the work painted by Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner around 1700. Hieronymous donated the painting to the Perlach Church of Bavaria.

In the painting Mary is standing on the crescent moon with the Holy Spirit hovering above as a dove. Assisted by angels, she is depicted untying the knots of a long wedding ribbon with her foot resting on the head of a knotted snake representing Satan.

Mary's connection to untying the knots of sin appears to have its roots in the words of the second-century French theologian, St. Irenaeus of Lyons. In his book, Adversus Haereses (Against Heresies), he presents a parallel between Eve and Mary in these words, "The knot of Eve's disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary. For what the virgin Eve had bound fast through unbelief, this (knot) the virgin Mary set free through faith."

Pope Francis has a deep abiding devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a child, he was greatly influenced by his Italian grandmother who fostered in Bergoglio a love and personal reverence for Our Lady. It is apparent, while in Germany, he found the devotion to Mary under her title: Mary, Untier of Knots a source of consolation during his years in "exile" there and during his several difficult years when he returned and lived in Cordaba, Argentina.

Perhaps we all can take a lesson from Pope Francis and turn to Mary, Untier of Knots when we find ourselves in situations that are difficult and beyond our means of straightening out. Her maternal care obviously has made a great difference in his life when he faced confusion and turmoil. So let our prayer also be: "Mary, Untier of Knots, pray for us."

Gratefully in the Lord,

Corporal Works of Mercy Collection: "Clothe the Naked"

- Weekend Masses May 10 & 11

The Young Adult Ministry is sponsoring a parish wide Corporal Works of Mercy Activity during the Easter Season. At each weekend Mass items will be collected from the members of the Parish, and then distributed accordingly by participants of the Young Adult Ministry. This week the Works of Mercy focus is "Clothe the Naked." Bring to the weekend Masses "gently used" professional clothing. These clothes go to benefit the Franciscan Center's Attire for Hire Program (learn more here). As the name suggests the clothing goes towards helping the less fortunate in the job interviewing process. The clothing is essential to an interview, so we are looking for suits, ties, dress shirts, and shoes for men - and professional dress for women - suits, blouses, shoes, scarves - anything for the professional interview. Bring clothing downstairs to Ignatian Hall where we will have clothing racks to accommodate.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations

- Sunday,  May 11

World Day of Prayer for Vocations always falls on the fourth Sunday of Easter, which is also called Good Shepherd Sunday because of the Gospel readings.

The purpose of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations is to publicly fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). As a climax to a prayer that is continually offered throughout the Church, it affirms the primacy of faith and grace in all that concerns vocations to the priesthood and to the consecrated life.  While appreciating all vocations, the Church concentrates its attention this day on vocations to the ordained ministries (priesthood and diaconate), to the Religious life in all its forms (male AND female, contemplative and apostolic), to societies of apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership, and to the missionary life, in the particular sense of mission "ad gentes"This year marks the 51st Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.

There is also a new website that has been developed by the U.S. Jesuits

that we wanted to share with you in which the Jesuits make it easy to find out about pursuing vocations, because it's interactive. Check it out!

  Embracing God's Gifts Movie Night

 - Wednesday, May 14

All are invited to join us in Ignatian Hall at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, May 14, for a Movie Night sponsored by  Embracing God's Gifts, our gay and lesbian ministry at St. Ignatius. The film to be viewed is entitled  Saint of 9/11.

Saint of 9/11 presents the turbulent, restless, spiritual and remarkable journey of Father Mychal Judge. Compassionate champion of the needy and forgotten, a beloved Fire Department Chaplain, rousing Irish-American balladeer and iconoclast, Father wrestled with his own private demons while touching others in powerful and miraculous ways. Mychal Judge knew the pain of loss and suffering. He struggled with alcoholism and was an outspoken AA advocate. Father Judge was a gay man who loved his priestly work. Saint of 9/11 portrays Mychal's life as a spiritual adventure and an honest embrace of life, where alcoholism and sexuality were acknowledged. Saint of 9/11 is the story of a life's journey interrupted. Inspired by his life, the documentary embraces Mychal's full humanity.  To view trailer, click here.

Can we recommend - THE RAILWAY MAN?
While some of this movie is difficult to view because of the violence that is experienced, this is a true story that talks of the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. It is a truly remarkable story. We recommend THE RAILWAY MAN.
The Railway Man - HD Trailer
The Railway Man - HD Trailer

Dir: Jonathan Teplitzky. Australia-UK. 2013. 116mins

The healing power of truth and reconciliation is touchingly affirmed in The Railway Man, a satisfyingly old-fashioned drama. The true story of a World War Two survivor confronting the horrors of the past is handled with tact and sensitivity by director Jonathan Teplitzky and a star cast. The story has a relevance to bitter divisions created by all global conflicts but will have the greatest resonance for the generation and their families mostly closely touched by events of seventy years ago.

The film's greatest appeal will lie with an older demographic drawn to dramas of substance, the very audience who have supported the likes of War Horse or The King's Speech. There should be substantial theatrical returns and potential awards consideration for the title in the UK where the Eric Lomax memoir was a bestseller and his story is well known. Lomax died last October at the age of 93 when the film was in post-production.

Lomax (Colin Firth) was a captive of the Japanese after the fall of Singapore in 1942 and suffered harrowing treatment as slave labour used in the construction of the " Death Railway" from Thailand to Burma. His fate was all the more ironic because of his lifelong enthusiasm for railways.

Larger Than Life:

Encountering My First Jesuit

BY Brian Doyle

The first Jesuit I ever met was about eight feet tall and weighed 400
pounds, and his robe alone was so vast that probably it could cover a small state like Delaware if necessary, as another one of us altar boys said, awed.

He wore sandals even though it was stone-cold winter when he was visiting our parish to do some sort of secret mysterious spiritual retreat with all the fathers in the Nocturnal Adoration Society. The Nocturnal Adoration Society was a secret group that only fathers in the parish could belong to. To be a member of the society you had to spend one night by yourself adoring the Blessed Sacrament on your knees and smoking cigarettes in the foyer of the church near the photograph of Fulton Sheen--a famous television actor, I think. Also you had to drink so much coffee during the night to stay awake to adore the Blessed Sacrament that when you came home at dawn your hands shook as you read the newspaper to see if the blessed Mets had egregiously punted away yet another eminently winnable tilt, as our dad said. Sometimes instead of tilt he said ostensible contest or competitive misadventure or theatrical pratfall. - (to continue article click here)
