The Watters' Edge - The Lenten Journey: Moved by Greater Love

My Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Next week we enter our Annual Lenten Season, making our pilgrimage to Palm Sunday, Holy Week and the Easter Triduum. In the Gospel of Matthew on Ash Wednesday, Jesus reminds us that there are three traditional ways by which we are to remain faithful to him and the Gospel: prayer, fasting and almsgiving to the poor. From the very beginning of the Apostolic church communities, these three disciplines were practiced by Christians, especially the Desert Fathers and Mothers, in their desire to grow ever closer to Jesus and his summons to "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." (Matt 5:48)

In the light of Jesus' instruction, I am inviting all our parishioners - our Ignatian colleagues - to undertake with me and the Jesuits of St. Ignatius a special time for prayer each day for the next nine weeks (March 2nd-May 3rd) of the Lenten-Easter Season. I am asking all of us to participate in the daily 'digital' spiritual prayer program called: MOVED TO GREATER LOVE. Developed by the Jesuit Conference in Washington, DC, the program will provide email materials each day that can be useful for our reflections and quiet time with Jesus, and will aid us in following this special path of prayer.

  • To participate you merely need to register by clicking here. This will allow you to receive an evening email with the link to the following day's material for prayer. Each day will include a reading, questions for reflection, and a multimedia component. There is no recommended time for this daily prayer; the materials themselves can be reviewed in 10 minutes or less.
  • To see an example of the beautiful simplicity of a daily mailing, click here.To visit the entire site you may click here.

We hope you will join us on this digital journey and dream of the transformative possibilities for yourself and our entire spiritual community as we move together in prayer and reflection.

The Archbishop's Annual Appeal Continues....

Just a reminder, the Archbishop's Annual Appeal is still continuing. As mentioned last week, it does so much good for the poor, supporting Catholic Charities and its 70+ programs including Apostleship by the Sea, Hispanic Ministry, Prison Ministry, Western Maryland Housing, and a host of other very worthy programs.

This weekend there will be opportunity for you to make a contribution at any of our Masses. To learn more about The Archbishop's Annual Appeal, visit the Archdiocese of Baltimore Website by clicking here.

St. Ignatius Parish Announces Novena of Grace

Next Tuesday, March 4th is the traditional beginning of the Novena of Grace in honor of St. Francis Xavier, a nine-day devotion that has been popular for centuries.  The first Novena of Grace dates back to 1634, when the intercession of St. Francis obtained the miraculous cure of another Jesuit.  The novena ends on March 12, the date on which Francis was canonized in 1622. To learn more about the fascinating history of the Novena of Grace, click here.

Novena of Grace prayer cards will be available at all of the upcoming weekend Masses, and will be prayed at all Masses from March 4-12.

In the wake of the 2007-08 financial crisis and the rise of the Occupy movement, the issue of income inequality has gained public awareness. Robert Reich, author, professor at the University of California, Berkeley, official in three administrations, including United States Secretary of Labor under Bill Clinton, narrates the film. Reich is a thinker on the topic of inequality, having spoken on the subject for nearly three decades. - Learn more about this film by clicking here. Download a flyer  here. VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis installed 19 new cardinals Saturday in a ceremony that unexpectedly included Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, marking the first time the two appeared together in public.

This batch of new cardinals, the first appointed by Francis, is significant because the group includes prelates from developing countries such as Burkina Faso and Haiti, in line with the pope's belief that the church should do more to help the world's poor.

"If the focus of this important week ends up being this eclectic group of new cardinals, then I don't think most people in the Vatican will complain," said Father Alistair Sear, a retired church historian. - to continue reading click here.
