My Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
Two things to share in this section:
First: In last week's Watters' Edge, I wrote about the Vatican's Questionnaire that addresses issues impacting Family Life. The Questionnaire has been sent to all bishops' conferences around the world asking that it be distributed to all parishes so that Catholics can fill it out and send it back to their bishops who, in turn, will send the tabulated results to the Vatican no later than December 31st of this year. Having found a well-composed version of the Questionnaire, we initially planned to send it out to all our parishioners. However, we received word from Archbishop Lori that, once he had the chance to meet with his advisory council of priests this week, he would be sending all the parishes the Questionnaire he would like us to utilize in responding to the Vatican's request to survey the thoughts and ideas of "grass roots" parishioners about the personal issues and moral challenges that are facing family life everywhere. Thus, as soon as we receive from the Archdiocese its version of the Questionnaire, we will make it available to everyone not only by email but also by way of printed copies for those who do not use email or find it too difficult to fill out a questionnaire online.
In addition to our planning for everyone to fill out the Questionnaire, we also have determined that everyone should have an opportunity to speak publicly about his/her responses to the Vatican's questions. Thus, we are planning to hold a series of forums after each Mass on the weekend of December 7th-8th. At each forum there will be a facilitator and a recorder to conduct an oral survey. The results of those gatherings will also be sent to the Archdiocese to be included in its report to the Vatican.
It is important that everyone take part in this amazing opportunity to inform our own Archbishop and the Vatican what our responses are to this unprecedented Questionnaire.
The second thing I want to share with you, just in case you have not seen the news report: "Pope Francis: I'm Like a Pharmacist," is the incident that went viral on Sunday. Do take a close look at the "medicine box" being distributed in St. Peter's Square. Even more importantly, take note of what is in the box. If you don't have what the medicine box contains, our parish will give one to you along with a "prescription card" that tells you how to use the medicine each day. Simply drop your name and email address in the container marked "medicine" in the narthex or in the Reeves Gallery. You will be notified when your "medicine" is ready. So read on about Pope Francis, the Pharmacist!!! - click here.

And so the Year of Faith Comes to a Close...
|
This Sunday, the Feast of Christ the King, we bring to a close our YEAR OF FAITH that was inaugurated on October 13, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. For us at St. Ignatius, we joined with our four other clustered parishes to sponsor five major talks on several documents of Vatican II-50 years after the opening of the Council. The talks were well attended at each parish and provided fresh insight into some of the major breakthroughs initiated at Vatican II on liturgy, scripture, interfaith relationships, and other important theological questions and issues.
Building on this special year we desire to encourage all of our parish-ioners to continue to dedicate some time each day to prayer and reflection, to spiritual reading, especially of the Bible, and to engagement in direct service of others, particularly the poor.
As we move into the Advent Season the weekend after Thanksgiving,
we will make available once again the "Daily Reflections for Advent & Christmas-We Wait in Joyful Hope 2013-2014" as a day-by-day help in fostering deeper prayer by all of our parishioners.
In addition, we are recommending three links that might interest you:

Our congratulations go to parishioner Mary Pat Clarke for receiving the GEDCO Leadership Award at GEDCO's 2013 Thanksgiving Tribute on November 14. The award went to her for all the many ways over many years she has worked at making the 14th District of Baltimore City, a caring and compassionate community. Mary Pat is the current representative of the 14th District on the Baltimore City Council.
The GEDCO Tenacity Award has been granted to her based upon this definition: Tenacity is the ability or characteristic of being persistent in the pursuit of goals, ideals and objectives. It is evident in those who are willing and able to endure setbacks or obstacles to achieve a desired result. It is the foundation of a "can do" attitude toward fulfilling aspirations.
Mary Pat's remarkable efforts include sponsoring the City's first Charter amendment to reduce class size in Baltimore City Public Schools (1982), the Tenants Right of First Refusal and Residential Permit Parking legislation and the nation's first "Living Wage" law (enacted in 1994). We applaud you, Mary Pat, for your accomplishments and a much deserved award.
Secondly, and because he would never mention this himself, we want to inform you that our own Father Watters is one of three recipients of the Agus-Shehan Interfaith Leadership Award, given by the Central Maryland Ecumenical Council. This award is given to leaders who have been major contributors to ecumenical and interfaith work in the Central Maryland area. He will be awarded this honor on November 25th.
