The Watters' Edge

My Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Last week, the headline read: "Pope Francis is shaking things up again." And so he is. This time it has to do with the novel idea of inviting the whole Church to engage in a "SURVEY ON THE MODERN FAMILY."

What Francis wants to do is to take the pulse of Catholics the world over by inviting them to respond to a questionnaire that will disclose what Catholics think about the family and the many issues related to family life: marriage, mixed marriages, co-habitation, polygamy, single-parent homes, divorce, second marriages, children, adoption, same-sex unions, etc. (For Catholic News Service Article on this click here)

At St. Ignatius Church we are disseminating the seven-page document "Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization" for all our parishioners to read and discuss. In the meantime you can download and print it out by clicking here.

At our staff and pastoral council meetings this week, we will be "fine-tuning" a "forum process" so that each parishioner will have the opportunity to respond to the questionnaire.

Because this questionnaire is an unprecedented step on the part of the Church's leadership to canvass the world wide grass roots parishioners' experiences and thoughts about the continuing social and spiritual crises facing family life, it will be important that everyone read the seven-page document and be prepared to participate in one of the forums that will take place after each of the Masses on the weekend of December 7-8, the Second Sunday of Advent. We will record the responses of our parishioners, collate them and forward them to the office of Archbishop Lorenzo Baldesseri who is the General Secretary for the Synod of Bishops in Vatican City.

Finally, there is an article I wanted to share with you from John Allen at the National Catholic Reporter. I might have entitled it differently, but, oh well. It's called The Synod Turns Sexy

Gratefully, In Christ,

News is happening right next to us!

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' fall General Assembly began on Monday in Baltimore. There is so much happening right around the corner from us! On the agenda was the election of the next conference president (Kurtz) and vice president, votes on draft translations of the Order of Celebrating Marriage and the Order of Confirmation, an update on the Promotion and Defense of Marriage and a proposal to develop a formal statement on dealing with pornography. If you have not been able to follow the proceedings...we've got you covered! Click here for reports on all of the proceedings. The Bishops Conference continues until Thursday, the 14th.

Can we just say that we particularly liked this focus of the conference? Catholic Bishops Challenged to Adapt to Pope Francis' Priorities.
A Lovely Embrace...

Pope Francis, pausing for a moment to pray and lay his hands on a man with a disfiguring disease. The man gently burying his head in the Pope's chest, his many facial tumors visible. His encounter with the ailing man occurred in Vatican City on Wednesday at the end of the general audience, which had about 50,000 attendees. Images of the Pope's embrace in St. Peter's Square went viral on social media. Visit a sampling of news sites below to see why the world is responding to this pope named after Francis of Assisi.

Spotlight on Ministry - Embracing God's Gifts

As members of the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church, we are called to celebrate and share the gifts of diversity of sexuality in our church today.  Our organization, Embracing God's Gifts, has been formed as an instrument for recognizing these gifts and incorporating their goodness and use into the life of our parish.  Our mission is to create opportunities for the spiritual enrichment, support and inclusion of all diverse individuals, while being informed by church teaching, and to promote awareness and community building among them.  (To continue reading click here)

The Simplicity of Being Jesus' Embrace

We love this video. We are a people who care about people. Jesus calls us to reach out, extend a hand, to do the difficult, or to do the simple. Sometimes we think showing the love of Jesus is a long, hard commitment. It can be a hug, or smile, a kind deed. It always means daring our lives to be interrupted for a moment...like those in this video who simply helped Jim. Let's be Jesus' arms of embrace everywhere we go! - Click here to view video.
