My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: When the Second Vatican Council opened on October 13, 1962, I was a scholastic (seminarian) beginning my first year of theological studies at the Jesuit School of Theology located at the time in the suburbs of Boston. For the next three years, in solidarity with all my fellow scholastics, I watched with growing excitement and profound amazement at the unfolding changes being introduced into the thinking, life and mission of the Church by the 2500 bishops who had come to the Council from all over the world. Those years were "heady times" for God's People. Now, 50 years later, with a new Pope at the helm of the Church, I find myself returning to those extraordinary days of Good Pope John XXIII (now Blessed) and his convening of that event-changing Council. I see Francis to be the new John, the one God has chosen to challenge the whole Church of our times to enter once again upon a profound renewal. His humble life style and warm embrace of the human family have been monumentally enhanced and strengthened by his recent 12,000 word interview which has astounded both the Church and the world. Francis has summoned us to put on a fresh set of glasses. He is demanding much of us all as he calls us to become, in the spirit of Vatican II, a reinvigorated Church for the times we are now encountering. And always at the center of that Church is Jesus Christ, God's compassionate Word of love to all of humanity. Let me encourage all of our parishioners to join me in reading prayerfully not once but several times over the rich insights of our amazing Pope Francis, God's gift to the Church and the world, in his interview that I sent to everyone on September 19th. (see lefthand column). Gratefully in Christ, |

With such great response (in number and content) to the recent historic interview with Pope Francis, America Magazine has posted 12 essays in their online edition that are wonderfully rich in insight. We thought it would be helpful to provide them to you. For essays click here.
Also we thought we'd link you up with Matt Malone, S.J., and his podcast in which he talks about the first in the history of America Magazine, called "Interviewing the Pope". To listen to this incredible 'behind the scenes story', click here.

This week we want to share with you one of the great hymns of faith, that actually went viral on the internet this past week. Meet Sam Robson, a London-based musician who delivers a most uniquely amazing and beautiful rendition of "I Need Thee, O I Need Thee".
Written in April 1872 it is thought to have been based on the exhortation of Jesus in John 15 verses 4 and 5. 'Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, I am in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.'

All are invited to join us in Ignatian Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 4, for our first Movie Night of the season. We will be viewing Gasland, a 2010 American documentary written and directed by Josh Fox. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2011, the film focuses on communities in the United States impacted by natural gas drilling and, specifically, a method of horizontal drilling into shale formations known as slickwater fracking. Join us for a time of discussion and refreshments following the documentary.
Morning of Reflection
- Saturday, October 5
Fr. Bob Hamm & Fr. George Williams will conduct morning sessions (8:30 a.m. - 12 noon) on prayer and reflection with time given for personal prayer, sharing and questions. We hope these presentations will lead us more deeply into our faith and help us to grow in our prayer life and our desire of service in the world we live in day by day.
