This past weekend we initiated our Annual Catechetical Sunday in concert with all Catholic parishes across the country. The "Ministry of Handing On the Gift of Our Catholic Faith in Jesus Christ and His Mission to the World Through the Community of the Church (God's People)" is a responsibility that belongs to all of us. Of course, the family of each child has a unique and primary role in doing so because each family is a "domestic church" where faith in Jesus and in the community of the Church is first nurtured and fostered.
The "domestic churches" collectively form the "parochial church" or parish church where the families gather together each Sunday to form the wider Church in support of one another and where they listen to the Word of God and celebrate the Sacrament of the Breaking of the Bread. Fortified by the Word and the Bread of Life, they return on mission to bring to their families and their neighbors the presence and Good News of Jesus Christ. In our Catholic world the parents, grandparents, godparents and siblings of each child have a very special and formative role to play within each of our "domestic or home churches."
The "parochial or parish church" is geared to assist the parents in the religious education of their children. We at St. Ignatius are greatly blessed to have a full-time director of religious education in the person of Duarte Aguiar and in a team of eight full-time volunteer catechist teachers who provide each Sunday the religious instruction about the Bible, the sacraments, the moral standards, the teachings, the saints and the traditions of our Catholic Faith. All of this instruction deepens our commitment to and love for Jesus Christ as lived out in the Community and Mission of the Catholic Church.
I therefore thank all the parents and families who have asked us to help them to teach their children in a deeper faith in Jesus Christ and in understanding the Church's teachings and traditions. I thank our PREP director and each of our volunteer teachers for preparing our young people for First Reconciliation (Confession), First Communion, Confirmation and the Mission of the Church to serve the world in response to the instructions of Jesus in the Great Commission to "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. . ." (Matt 28: 19-20).

Amazing Grace - The Story Behind the Song
|
Father Watters began the homily on Sunday speaking of the great hymn of faith, "Amazing Grace". He spoke of the author (John Newton), and the awareness of God's profound compassion and forgiveness he came into having lived a life at odds with God and His great love and grace. We thought we'd share more with you about the history of Newton, a former slave trader, and the song that strikes so profoundly at the heart of any who catch a glimpse of the righteous, loving, holiness of God, and our own selves in light of his majesty.

Events During the Next Week

Women of the New Testament
Women of the New Testament explores the diverse roles of women in the early church by studying and discussing the New Testament, other writings and practices of the early church, and scholarly commentary on these sources. In the light of this process, the group - women and men - pray to discern the roles to which women (and men) are being called in the contemporary church. All are invited to join us in Ignatian Hall for our next meeting on Tuesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month (except December). We are currently reading "Back to the Well" by Frances Taylor Gench. For more information or to sign up, contact us.
