May is Older America's Month

 Safe Today Healthy Tomorrow Each May, the nation celebrates Older Americans Month to recognize older Americans for their contributions and provide them with information to help them stay healthy and active. This year, the focus is on injury prevention with the theme Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow. Hamilton County Elderly Services Program reopens for limited enrollment
After being closed to all new enrollments for two months, the Hamilton County Elderly Services Program has re-opened to people in certain emergency circumstances. To reduce costs, Council on Aging temporarily closed the program on March 10, 2014. The two-month closure and other cost-saving measures have had the desired effect, but enrollment will remain limited to people who meet certain emergency criteria and the pace of enrollment will be slow.  Care Transition expands to four more hospitals
Care Transitions, COA's program to reduce hospital re-admissions, is expanding to four additional hospitals, bringing the total to nine regional hospitals. The new hospitals are: * Mercy Health - Anderson Hospital * Mercy Health - Clermont Hospital * Mercy West Hospital * West Chester Hospital - UC Health Care Transitions is designed to prevent at-risk older adults from returning to the hospital within a few days or weeks of discharge. COA expands service area
Council on Aging is expanding case management services to younger individuals with disabilities who need long-term care services. The services are provided through the Ohio Home Care Waiver Program, serving people who live within a 21-county area surrounding Cincinnati, Dayton, and Lima. The program helps people to remain independent in their homes and avoid unnecessary placement in institutional settings such as nursing homes or hospitals. Read more

COA releases 2013 ESP annual reports
All four ESP programs help serviced 13,881 seniors last year according to the 2013 annual reports. A win-win program for seniors and taxpayers -- saving money and delaying or preventing nursing home placement. Read more about each county annual report. Butler, Clinton, Hamilton or Warren

Council on Aging opens satellite office in Wilmington to better serve residents of Clinton County
To better serve older adults and people with disabilities in Clinton County and to help them remain independent in their homes, COA has opened a satellite office in Wilmington. The new office allows COA staff to work closer to the clients they serve and visit on a regular basis. Learn More

Dr. John Blocher inducted into state Senior Citizens Hall of Fame
Dr. John Blocher a pioneer in the field of chemistry and the Oxford resident is among twelve remarkable older Ohioans inducted this year into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. He joins more than 400 individuals who have been inducted since 1978 by the Ohio Department of Aging. Read More

The OKI Regional Council of Governments is updating a policy plan to improve quality of life and service to the public in southwest Ohio, northern Kentucky, and southeast Indiana. They are asking for input from you. Learn more

Homestead Exemption deadline nears and new rule for 2014
