IESA Newsletter- June, 2015
Dear

Greeting from India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) !

IESA successfully organised couple of Policy Working group meeting with members to recommend MNRE on Energy Storage Road-map and draft EoI for Energy storage Project. This will bring India as one of the lucrative energy storage markets in the near future. Recently launched IRENA Energy Storage Road-map predicts 150 GW+ electrochemial storage potential globally by 2030. A big shout-out to new IESA members EXIDE Industries, AMARA RAJA, FIREFLY, PLUSS and PRAYAS (Energy Group).

IESA New Industry Report:

IESA estimates stationary and motive lead acid battery market to be Rs. 13,500 crore in 2015

As studied by IESA, the stationary and motive lead acid battery market in India is growing by over 11% and the market will be Rs. 13,500 crore (over $2.14 bn) by the end of 2015. The slowing down of huge inverter market will be compensated by high growth in electric vehicle and solar PV market. The market is forecast to be Rs. 25,000 crore ($4 bn) by 2020.

In the last three months IESA has done at in-depth analysis of lead acid battery market in India by speaking to over 50 participants in the industry and engaging customers and retailers on sites. These efforts are now being documented in form of a comprehensive industry report on lead acid batteries. This battery report has covered various aspects of the industry like market revenue, market growth forecast, market drivers and challenges, key trends, sales channels,  supply chain, applications, market share analysis of top 20 companies, their business profiling and raw material sourcing.

The Battery Industry Landscape 2015 report by IESA will be launced on 15th of July 2015. The report will be priced at US$ 3,500.

IRENA launches energy storage technology roadmap

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has published a technology road-map aimed at accelerating the deployment of electrical storage for renewable energy. The road-map estimates that to meet international renewable energy targets, some 150GW of battery storage and 325GW of pumped hydro storage will be needed.

IRENA's ninth Council meeting, prioritizes 14 action items across five priority areas where governments and industry can work together to facilitate the development of policies on electricity storage for renewables. "Now is the time to think about integrating large-scale battery storage into the global energy system," said IRENA Director-General Adnan-Z Amin. The roadmap is the product of four stakeholder workshops involving more than 200 electricity storage experts from 50 countries. One of the workshop was held at New Delhi, India in December 2014 during 2nd Energy storage India (ESI) conference.

Estimates for India are 15-20 GW by 2020 of which nearly 6 GW is for solar and wind integration and 2.5 GW for rural electrification and rest includes other applications like back up power, Transmission and distribution and ancillary market development etc. IESA was actively involved throughout the process of this roadmap development and Dr. Rahul Walawalkar, VP, Customized Energy Solutions & Executive Director, Indian Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), Vice Chair, GESA was a speaker for this Workshop at Abu Dhabi during this conference.

There was also a 6 member Team from India lead by Shri Upendra Tripathy, Secretary, MNRE attended this event. Despite the limited role of energy storage, MNRE is keen to understand the transformative role electricity storage can play in the grid infrastructure. MNRE has published a call for expressions of interest in energy storage projects. Based on the feedback received, it is now developing a National Storage Mission to coincide with the national missions on solar, wind and smart grid. A guiding principle for supporting them is to explore new business models for energy storage projects and ensure energy storage technologies provide grid services beyond the support for renewable integration. India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) is working closely with all the stakeholders to create a technology neutral platform to develop this market to provide universal quality and reliable energy access.
