All-SoHE Retreat: Jan. 16
Come to the Michael Axelrod Collaborative Learning Hall, 2235 Nancy Nicholas Hall, on Thursday, Jan.16, to learn about Design Thinking and other exciting SoHE initiatives and discover the identify of recipients of the SoHE's Excellence in Outreach and Engagement Awards. Come for coffee and bagels at 7:45 a.m. Presentations begin at 8:00 a.m.

Carolyn Kallenborn Exhibition, 'Storms and DreamsDesign Studies Associate Professor Carolyn Kallenborn's latest exhibition, Storms and Dreams, runs through Feb. 19 at The Fashion Gallery, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. With assistance from the SoHE and other supporters, the exhibition speaks to the beauty of the interaction between opposites. The opening reception on Jan. 9 included a screening of Kallenborn's film, Woven Lives, her artist's lecture, and comments by Aureny Aguirre, representative of the Consular General of Mexico to Hon Kong. Lower Interest for Timeliness Project: Jan. 14
The Center for Financial Security is sponsoring a webinar on the Lower Interest for Timeliness Project (LIFT) on Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The project is a partnership between the Center and the Filene Research Institute, with funding from the Center for Financial Services Innovation's Financial Capability Innovation Fund I. Call for Proposals: Teaching & Learning Symposium
The UW-Madison 2014 Teaching and Learning Symposium: Transforming Education is set for May 19-20 at Union South. The organizers are seeking proposals for engaging sessions that spotlight transformations in all corners of UW-Madison's teaching and learning experiences. Faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students are all welcome to submit proposals. Proposal forms are available at: www.learning.wisc.edu/tlsymposium/. The deadline is Jan. 24.

Crafting Canoes: Art & Science of Hydro-Dynamic Design
A new exhibition, Crafting Canoes: Art & Science of Hydro-Dynamic Design, runs in the Ruth Davis Design Gallery from Feb. 2 through Apr. 6. Call for Beckner Proposals: Feb. 14
The SoHE's Outreach Planning Council is now accepting proposals for the 2014 Meta Beckner Awards. Deadline is Feb. 14. Decisions will be made by Feb. 28, with funding period to begin July 1, 2014. Complete guidelines are available on the SoHE website.

Congrats to...
Jill Riley on her recent appointment as the Early Childhood representative on the Governor's Read to Lead Literacy Council. The Council is a public-private partnership formed to support and expand reading programs around the state, as well as identify what works. Read more. 7 SoHE students who received $5,000 scholarships: The Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF) committee reviewed approximately 255 applicants from 45 participating schools, selecting 131 winners to receive a $5,000 Scholarship. Congratulations to these deserving SoHE students!

Marquis Mason, a student majoring in Community and Nonprofit Leadership, was featured in The Capital Times, highlighting his volunteer work on Vera Court. The UW-Madison wide receiver grew up just down the street from the Neighborhood Center where he now interns.

Students in Maria Kurutz's patternmaking class competed in an outerwear competition sponsored by Lands' End. The students began their assignment with a tour of Lands' End facilities in Dodgeville, learning about the company's heritage, style and brand.
