I'm asking for review of assessment process
Can we save money by centralizing property assessments?

Currently our 18 individual township assessors give values to our properties using a county wide mass appraisal software system. If property owners object to their assessed value they can appeal to the board of review in Waukegan.

I am convinced that we can save millions of dollars of staff time by moving the entire assessment management up to Waukegan. That does not mean that professional staff would not investigate and have a local presence to interact with property owners.

I went to our Revenue, Records, & Legislation Committee last week to ask permission for staff to look into best practices on the County Assessment process to possibly reduce costs, provide more consistent assessments across township lines, and provide good customer service to our residents. Staff was given the green light by the RR&L Committee to investigate this matter. Our staff will be gathering data and putting together facts for discussion.
