Greetings!
Last month, Contra Costa schools joined tobacco-prevention advocates across the country in celebration of Kick Butts! Day 2013. Locally, Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Peer Educators planned school-wide events to educate their peers on the dangers of tobacco use and empower the next generation of tobacco-free advocates!
Here are some highlights:
- Peer Educators at El Dorado Middle School in Concord created a powerful visual display pictured below. Their message was not only visible to students but also to the general public.
- Also pictured below, Antioch High School Peer Educators developed and facilitated classroom presentations where they led their peers in interactive tobacco-prevention activities and shared examples of healthy and unhealthy lungs.
- Lisa Starr, Counselor and TUPE Coordinator at Park Middle School in Antioch, had this to say about their school-wide Kick Butts! Day activities: "...educational, hands-on, experiential, engaging and created curiosity and tobacco-prevention awareness among our students!"
April is Alcohol Awareness Month. To learn more, visit the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). Also, check out the column on the right for links to information about MADD's PowerTalk21 day on April 21.
Sincerely,
Emily Justice Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE)

It isn't too late to plan and implement tobacco-prevention activities on your school campus this school year!
Quick & easy and no/low cost Activity Ideas:
- Create powerful visual displays to help people realize the deadly consequences of tobacco use:
- Everyone has reasons why they are tobacco-free, especially former smokers. Set up a booth to take photos of students/staff with personalized, "I am tobacco-free because..." signs.
