Health & Wellness Masthead
November 2012

Greetings!

Tobacco use remains the #1 cause of disease and premature death in the United States. The American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout on November 15 will encourage tobacco users to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance to quit using tobacco on that day.

There are a lot of free resources for current tobacco users seeking support for quitting:

This day is also a great opportunity for students to implement tobacco-prevention activities on their school campuses and provide support to those wishing to quit.

I am always available if you have any questions or are seeking additional student health resources.

Sincerely,

Emily Justice

What is BriefBrief Intervention Cover Intervention?

Brief Intervention is a counseling type intervention consisting of 2-3 sessions with individuals who are unsure about changing their drug use.

Why Brief Intervention?

Along with the need for services specifically targeting youth with problems associated with their drug use, there is a gap between treatment need and treatment availability, especially for adolescents. Brief Intervention helps to fill this gap.

Who can facilitate Brief Intervention sessions?

Any school or community-based organization staff who are willing to listen and support a young person can successfully facilitate Brief Intervention sessions.
