Patient Testimonial
after a change in DBS stimulation settings:
"I felt the best that I had felt in years. Also I was able to talk on the phone and be heard and understood too. It's nice to feel somewhat normal again. It's been a very long time."

Greetings!

Greetings from Colorado's Movement & Neuroperformance Center
Empathic Care. Empowered Patient. Mindful Healing.

OUR FIRST YEAR!
We have experienced amazing growth since our center opened one year ago. We feel great satisfaction in choosing Colorado to fulfill a dream to open and own a clinic that focuses on improving the quality of life of our patients. Our high touch - high tech approach offers specialty neurologic care with empathy and concern for every patient. This holistic approach has been widely embraced by Coloradans. Our philosophy of care remains strong:

This edition highlights some of our accomplishments and outreach that will continue to grow and expand access for expert care for people living with movement and cognitive conditions.
Making great inroads in expanding specialty neurologic care in Colorado
New Clinic Locations

After listening to our

community this past year, we have established new clinic locations in Ft. Collins and Boulder. Dr. Giroux and Sierra Farris PA-C will be offering appointments for medical care and deep brain stimulation evaluations and programming. All appointments will continue to be scheduled through our main office in Englewood adjacent to Swedish Medical Center.

Dr. Giroux - A New Medical Director on the Swedish Medical Center Campus in Englewood, Colorado
Colorado's Fastest Growing Movement Disorders and Deep Brain Stimulation Program

Dr. Giroux has accepted the position as medical director of the Swedish Medical Center Movement Disorders & Deep Brain Stimulation Program. Dr. Giroux will share her passion for patient-centered care and program development skills to increase awareness and access to high tech surgical therapies for people living with Tremor, Parkinson's and Dystonia. Coloradan's now have more options to be evaluated for surgery or seek a second opinion about DBS by national DBS experts. Swedish Medical Center's commitment to a DBS Program that offers the highest in quality and outcomes is represented by their collaboration with established national DBS experts and providing state of the art surgery and brain imaging equipment. Enhancing Continuum of Care

Dr. Giroux was appointed Neurology Program Director for Heritage Club of Greenwood Village and Brookdale Senior Care Community in Denver, CO. She will be developing specialized Parkinson's disease and stroke care programs for people choosing assisted living and those requiring skilled nursing rehabilitation and nursing home stays. Dr. Giroux has extensive experience in interdisciplinary and patient focused care and is excited to work with Heritage Club to enhance life quality for people with neurologic disease. This collaboration is unique as there are very few long term care communities nationally that work closely with a movement disorder trained neurologist to improve the care of Parkinson's disease residents.

"My goal has always been to improve life quality of all people living with Parkinson's disease and I believe we should focus just as much attention on later stage of disease as we do with early disease. This includes easing the concerns of families by providing the highest level of  care and support when they are faced with a transition such as moving a loved one into an assisted care or nursing home community."

"Our commitment to work as a team, the inclusion of neurologic oversight and the ability actually deliver onsite-neurologic consultations from an expert who really understands issues related to quality of life is what will make this program different and serve as a model of care for others."

We will report on the progress of this program in future issues of our newsletter.
Tremor Education & Support Group Grows
Mindfulness Therapy for Tremor
Dr. Giroux was guest speaker at our August Tremor meeting. Fourty-one people attended the meeting. Dr. Giroux reviewed the neurologic basis of how stress impacts function of our nervous system and how we can counteract and mitigate the cascading effects that stress and anxiety have on our nervous system. Dr. Giroux will be offering a mindfulness meditation class in 2014 for people interested in learning how to apply mindfulness strategies to harness the power of the nervous system. Unlike medications, mindfulness therapy is not associated with bothersome side effects and can make a positive impact in our daily lives.

Our next  tremor meeting is on October 1st. Topic is Understanding Balance Problems that coincide with Tremor. Discussion will be in a panel format to include neurology and physical therapy perspectives.
Deep Brain Stimulation Troubleshooting Clinic
Improving Outcomes for People Living with Deep Brain Stimula tion
Sierra Farris PA-C is helping people obtain better results after deep brain stimulation. Sierra has now seen people living with DBS with poor results from 34 states across the USA (noted in blue). Sierra's special clinic is designed to assess the results from DBS, eliminate stimulation side effects and optimally adjust stimulation settings for best results. If needed, brain imaging or x-rays can be obtained at Swedish Medical Center using DBS safety protocols. Learn more about Sierra's clinic here.
Deep Brain Stimulation Seminars
Building Awareness and Access to Deep Brain Stimulation
Two Deep brain stimulation seminars are available in the next couple months. These events are for anyone wanting to learn more about DBS or to meet us in person to ask questions or share your story.
