Archimedes Spiral Tremor

Brief Overview of Tremor:

Diagnosing tremor can be challenging, even for the most experienced neurologist. There are many tremor types that can affect any body part. Tremor also has many causes and it can take several years to arrive at a diagnosis. The most common causes of tremor include Familial Tremor, Parkinson's tremor, tremor associated with Dystonia or Multiple Sclerosis. Tremor can also be caused by some medications, stress, caffeine, nerve damage, heavy metals or muscle weakness. The diagnosis is typically determined based on the characteristics of the tremor and the body part affected. Some laboratory tests also can help narrow down the diagnosis.

When a diagnosis is pending, individuals can still benefit from therapies that help adapt to the tremor. For instance, occupational therapy can help with tremor involving the hands, neck, head and arms. Stress reduction therapy such as mindfulness can lessen the emotional impact of tremor during the day and night. Tremor support groups can also be helpful to learn from others and gain additional knowledge about tremor.

New Tremor Support Group now forming. Initial meeting to be held October 2, 2012 from 4pm to 6pm at the Center. To register, call 303-781-0511 or email events@centerformovement.org.

Update from Sierra Farris, PA-C
SierraDBS

Physical activity is important for your PD and your general health. Before starting or increasing the intensity of a physical activity program, see your primary care provider for a check-up.

Some pre-existing medical problems can increase your risk of an adverse event during exercise. For example, leg swelling, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath and chest pain or discomfort are all symptoms that should be discussed with your doctor before engaging in an exercise or physical activity program.
