Guest Column: Hypertension Canada Makes Its Mark in Indonesia
By Dr. Ross Tsuyuki

Dr. Norm Campbell and I travelled to Surabaya, Indonesia
from January 22-26 to set the groundwork for a hypertension management study using pharmacists to identify and collaboratively manage hypertension in the country. Along with collaborators Drs. Hanni Puspitasari and Pirlina Ummiastuti (Airlangga University Faculty of Pharmacy and Department of Public Health, respectively), we attended a two-day symposium entitled "Pharmacist and Physician Collaboration in the Management of Hypertension", held at the Mercure Hotel Surabaya and attended by about 500 (!) delegates. Needless to say, there was a lot of interest in hypertension and Hypertension Canada there.

Shifting Focus
New 2015-2020 U.S. Dietary Guidelines emphasize healthy eating patterns, not just choices.

The U.S. Dietary Guidelines have been released for 2015-2020. In response to the increase in American obesity and chronic disease in the last two decades, the 5-year update focuses on creating healthy eating patterns and measures the current eating behaviours against the recommendations.  Most notably, the recommendation for dietary sodium intake has been set at a maximum of 2,300 mg/day, with pre-hypertensive and hypertensive adults advised to cut back to 1,500 mg/day - that's less than half of the average American's actual daily sodium intake today. The 2015-2020 Guidelines are heavily focused on the prevention of hypertension, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Click here for the full report.
