With the successful conclusion of our fifth annual Canadian Hypertension Congress, Canada's only scientific conference devoted to hypertension and cardiometabolic disease, we thank all who attended and support the Congress, and share our photo gallery with our hypertension community.   This eINFO issue highlights the launch of the CHEP Guidelines online resource, new Board members and Officers, the WHO's Draft Final Report of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity, among other national and international news.  Happy reading!

The 2015 Canadian Hypertension Congress is a wrap! 
 
Three hundred delegates attended the 2015 Canadian Hypertension Congress from October 22 - 24 in Mississauga, Ontario. Here are just a few of the highlights from this year's stellar scientific program and conference:
  • A record number of family physicians, nurses and pharmacists gathered for the second edition of Primary Care day, which featured sessions on behaviour change by psychologist, Dr. Tavis Campbell and the latest advice on blood pressure measurement/diagnosis from Dr. Mark Gelfer.
  • Renown Dr. Curt Sigmund gave the Inaugural Vancouver 2010 Invitational Lecture titled The Role of Novel PPAPy Pathways in the Control of Vascular Function and Arterial Pressure.
  • The 2015 Trainee Presentation Awards, funding provided by Vancouver 2010, selected based on their research presentations were:  Antoine Caillon, Stephanie Caliguiri, Estelle Rolande Simo Cheyou, Jessica Fares, Cynthia Pruss and Jason Zelt.

CHEP Guidelines Evidence Now Online

You asked and we delivered! The CHEP Guidelines have moved to a new, easy-to-access platform featuring the current guidelines, their rationale and supporting evidence for health care professionals to stay up to date on the latest recommendations.


At guidelines.hypertension.ca, the guidelines have been categorized based on Diagnosis and Assessment, and Prevention and Treatment to ensure you can find what you need. We've also added a new interactive tool to assess blood pressure targets and treatment, the latest downloadable resources for health care professionals and their patients, and access to an order form for paper copies.

New Hypertension Canada Board Members and Officers

Hypertension Canada's membership elected new Board members at this year's Annual General Meeting. The Board welcomes Mr. David Lui, Vice-President of Marketing for Mark's at Canadian Tire Corporation; and Dr. Raj Padwal, physician, epidemiologist and health services researcher, and long-term member of the CHEP Guidelines Task Force.  President Dr. Ernesto Schiffrin is pleased to announce two new Officer appointments:  Dr. Nadia Khan, Professor of Medicine, scientist and general internist, to Vice-President; and Mr. Trevor Hudson, Certified Professional Accountant and Partner at Deloitte LLP, to Treasurer. WHO Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity Draft Final Report
Open for comment: 29 September - 13 November, 2015

The World Health Organization's Draft Final Report of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity is now open for comment. The Commission was announced last year and given a mandate to craft effective strategies for handling childhood and adolescent obesity around the world. There are several contributing factors which appear in different countries, regions, and economic climates that must be taken into consideration. The September issue of ISH Hypertension News (Opus 42)

This issue contains a six-part "Hot off the Press" section featuring two reports on baroreceptor activation treatment and basic science, plus four shorter reports including an investigation into the relationship between adherence to antihypertensive drugs and hospitalization for heart failure, and the impact grief can have on an individual's blood pressure.
