IN FOCUS
2014 CHEP Recommendations
On behalf of the Canadian Hypertension Education Program Recommendations Task Force, we are pleased to announce the completion of the 2014 CHEP Recommendations. 2014 is a key milestone for CHEP and Hypertension Canada as it marks the 15th consecutive year that CHEP has updated our recommendations for the management of hypertension.
CHEP's evidence-based recommendations are developed annually through intense discussion of the clinical implications via a systematic review of the literature followed by critical appraisals of all the new clinical research and taking into account the assessment criteria in the AGREE II instrument. AGREE II stands for The Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation (AGREE) Instrument, which evaluates the process of practice guideline development and the quality of reporting. Read more about CHEP recommendations process and AGREE II assessment here.
In 2014, new CHEP recommendations provide updated guidance for the treatment of the very elderly, patients with ischemic heart disease and for the use of acetylsalicylic acid for primary prevention. In addition, new sodium intake thresholds are proposed and A1c testing is has been added as a recommended test for diabetes screening.
In order to facilitate the dissemination of the 2014 CHEP recommendations, we continue to emphasize these seven key messages:
- All Canadian adults should have their blood pressure assessed at all appropriate clinical visits.
- Optimum management of the hypertensive patient requires assessment and communication of overall cardiovascular risk.
- Home BP monitoring is an important tool in self-monitoring and self-management.
- Treat to target.
- Lifestyle modifications are effective in preventing hypertension, treating hypertension and reducing cardiovascular risk.
- Comibinations of both lifestyle changes and drugs are generally necessary to achieve target blood pressures.
- Focus on adherence.

Our educational tools are updated annually to reflect these changes. For the latest tools and updates, please visit the Hypertension Canada website.
