IN FOCUS
Hypertension Advisory Committee

The Hypertension Advisory Committee, chaired by Dr. Norm Campbell, CIHR/HSF Chair in Hypertension Prevention and Control, continues to support the advancement of public policies to improve Canadians dietary health.  Recent activities include:

  • Launch of Policy Consensus Statement to Restrict Unhealthy Food and Beverage Marketing to Children.  The statement was officially launched on May 12th in a joint release by Hypertension Canada, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Public Health Association.  Endorsed by 23 national and provincial health organizations, the statement reinforces the growing international commitment to reduce unhealthy food marketing to children as a strategy to prevent dietary-related diseases.    Organizational endorsement is ongoing; members are encouraged to circulate the statement  Key messages and other tools to support the statement will be available for download over the summer.
  • Science of Salt Weekly.  Supported by a one-year funding grant from the Canadian Stroke Network, and in collaboration with the George Institute, this initiative involves conducting weekly PubMed and Medline searches on dietary sodium.  Evidence summaries will be published weekly through HypertensionTALK.  Selected authors will be invited to guest blog on key findings with identified leaders in the field encouraged to comment.

Hypertension Canada's Canadian Hypertension Education Program (CHEP) has been selected as recipient of the 2013 Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Dr. Harold N. Segall Award of Merit.  This award was created in 1991 in honour of the late Dr. Harold N. Segall, who was a founding Member of the CCS and for many years served as the Society's Archivist. It recognizes a significant contribution to the prevention of cardiovascular disease or the promotion of cardiovascular health in Canadians.  The award will be presented at the 2013 CCC at Vascular 2013.  Many CHEP volunteers have contributed to the development of the CHEP process, creation of evidence-based annual recommendations, and extensive knowledge translation efforts. Congratulations to the dedicated team of volunteers whose achievements are recognized by this award!
