IN FOCUS
World Hypertension Day
Each year, May 17th is designated as World Hypertension Day. This special day was established to communicate to the public information on prevention, detection and treatment of high blood pressure. Hypertension is a preventable condition that untreated can lead to stroke, heart and kidney diseases.
Hypertension Is A Global Epidemic!
Globally, 9.4 million die every year and 1.5 billion people worldwide suffer because of high blood pressure or hypertension. It is the biggest single risk factor for death worldwide causing heart disease, stroke and kidney disease and diabetes. In Canada, an estimated 7.4 million people have high blood pressure.
Additional awareness activities are launching for World Hypertension Day:
- The new public face of the Hypertension Canada website is live! Check it out.
- Take a look at the Best Life Rewarded website and the new section with blood pressure information provided by Hypertension Canada. Sign up and explore the site to find out about how to earn points for healthy behaviours.
- April 23rd marked World Health Day and World Hypertension Day at the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Read more...
- Our thanks to Loblaw and Medtronic for their public relations effort to raise awareness of hypertension for World Hypertension Day.
Special efforts are being made across Canada to encourage early detection and prevention of hypertension. Tell us what is happening in your communities in May to create awareness of World Hypertension Day. admin@hypertension.ca

"Train the Trainer" Goes to PEI
In collaboration with Health PEI, the Professional Education Committee of Hypertension Canada held a Train the Trainer(TTT) session on May 2, 2013 in Charlottetown, PEI.
The accredited TTT sessions are designed to meet the educational needs of healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare educators/promoters) working with hypertensive and pre-hypertensive populations. Each session includes a presentation of the latest CHEP Recommendations and educational resources/tools, followed by a discussion of different case studies with participants and experts.
Over 100 professionals participated in the TTT session in PEI! Congratulations to Therese Harper, PhD, Hypertension Coordinator, Health PEI and the local organizing team on the success of the training event.
