IN FOCUS -
Canadian Hypertension Advisory Committee

The Canadian Hypertension Advisory Committee (CHAC) is a coalition of leading national health organizations convened and chaired by Dr. Norm Campbell, HSFC/CIHR Chair in Hypertension Prevention and Control, to support the implementation of the Hypertension Framework  recommendations.  Among them, and the focus of CHAC's work, is advancing healthy public policies to improve the diet of the people of Canada. A range of actions are being implemented to advance the policy agenda and include:

  • Support for Bill C-460, an Act respecting the implementation of the sodium reduction strategy for Canada.   Hypertension Canada members are urged to support this bill, contact their member of parliament  and sign and share the petition to support this bill to achieve the sodium intake goal of 2300mg of sodium per day by 2016.
  • Policy Consensus Statement to Restrict Unhealthy Food and Beverage Marketing to Children Outlines recommendations for governments, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders to restrict unhealthy food and beverage marketing to children. Expected to be released in March 2013.
  • "Call to Action" to Buy and Sell Healthy Foods: The Canadian Hypertension Congress 2012 was a great example of healthy great tasting food. Widespread adoption of policies to buy and sell healthy food will help create a healthy food environment and assist Canadians to make healthy choices. Specific recommendations in the Call to Action are provided to governments, the commercial and the non-commercial sectors, all of which share responsibility for the health of Canadians.
  • Launch of HypertensionTALK.  Funded by the HSFC/CIHR Chair in Hypertension Prevention and Control, HypertensionTALK was developed to provide a platform for consumers, health care professionals, researchers, communities and others to engage in, communicate and take action on key strategies to prevent and manage the risks of hypertension nationally and world-wide.
