Goodbye Pizza, Hello Weight Loss
Michael Swims used to eat pizza every day.
Like many single guys, he ate out a lot, and pizza was one of his favorite meals.
But on Dec. 19, he made a commitment to eat healthier, and so for almost two months, he's been consuming more fruits and vegetables, drinking a lot of water --- and watching pounds melt away
What sparked the change? "I looked at myself in the mirror," he said, laughing.
Healthy eating has been easier because a colleague gave him a crock pot so he could prepare nutritious foods while he's working as a surgical technician at DePaul Medical Center.
He appreciates the support from his co-workers, including many recipes that they post on Facebook. A current favorite is chicken fajitas.
"I feel better," he said. "I don't feel so full all the time. And I sleep better." He plans to keep up the healthy eating and continue to exercise to make his weight loss goals.

Simply Fresh Brings Healthy Food Choices to You Become part of the fresh food movement with Simply Fresh, an exciting collaborative education series exclusively for Bon Secours employees. "Our employees have told us year after year that they want to make healthy food choices without compromising on taste," said Ira Korshin, project analyst, Employee Wellness. Inspired by the request, Employee Wellness has teamed up with Morrison's, Class-A-Roll and the Evelyn D. Reinhart Guest House at St. Mary's Hospital to put together a series of food demo opportunities that provide resources, tips and recipes to assist employees in planning and preparing healthy, delicious and affordable meals at home. The series will begin in March and travel to all Bon Secours Virginia facilities via Class-A-Roll, our Bon Secours mobile learning kitchen, said Rachel Bulifant, MSNW, RD, manager, Community Nutrition. Class-A-Roll dietitians will support the nutrition and cooking education, and Morrison's chefs will lead the demonstrations, which will focus on quick prep and tons of flavor. "Simply Fresh adds to our goal of creating a culture of health by highlighting a very important component of that - our food environment and food choices," said Bulifant. "It will be an interactive and fun educational opportunity for all our employees." Simply Fresh Schedule:
March 11 | SMH Guest House | April 8 | SFMC | May 13 | Windsor | June 10 | RCH | July 8 | MRMC | Aug. 12 | Mary Immaculate | Sept. 9 | DePaul | Oct. 14 | Maryview |

Winning at Weight Loss --- Even During the Holidays
Richmond Community Hospital employees celebrate their Maintain, Don't Gain success with a smoothie party. The holidays may leave us with sweet memories --- or sweets that pack on the pounds. But for employees in the Maintain, Don't Gain Challenge, the new year started a little lighter. Bon Secours Virginia's Employee Wellness department hosted Maintain, Don't Gain, an 8-week challenge in November and December to keep employees mindful of their weight and wellness during a time when it can be easily forgotten. Participants in Maintain, Don't Gain were encouraged to complete custom workouts created by Employee Wellness Coach Coordinator Jake Broaddus, and log their weight and physical activities weekly. All tracking was done on the Motivation Alliance to earn points, and employees competed against each other by facility. The prize for the winning facility was a healthy snack time provided by Employee Wellness for the entire site. When the points were tallied, Richmond Community Hospital emerged as champions, winning the challenge and the prize. Participant Benny Cook said, "The program was much needed here at Richmond Community, because a lot of people just don't know what they can do - but this program really helped take us to the next level for 2015." Participants from every facility combined to lose 245.5 pounds! Congratulations to all who successfully maintained and decreased their weight during the holidays, and especially to Richmond Community Hospital! |

Employees Choose to Lose --- Big!
Hampton Roads participants celebrate at the conclusion of Choose to Lose. In September 2014, Bon Secours Virginia employees signed on to the 19-week health and wellness program, Choose to Lose, which concluded in early January. Choose to Lose included fitness and nutrition assessments, fitness sessions with a personal trainer and meetings with a registered dietitian. Several employees dropped their BMI categories. This is a major indicator of lowered risk of health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and various other health conditions. Read what participants had this to say about the program. |
