Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Day of Service

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 19, observed with the MLK Day of Service which empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems and moves closer to Dr. King's vision of a beloved community.

King once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.

Look for Special Recipes in Cafeterias on Jan. 19
Our hospitals honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. each year. Along with mindfulness and observances, we include a special meal in our cafeterias. This year, we feature the cuisine of noted chef Edna Lewis (1916-2006), a champion of the Southern cooking skills she learned growing up in Freetown, Va. Later, she achieved fame for introducing new generations to early 20th century African-American cooking through her restaurant in New York and her cookbooks. Lewis received the James Beard Living Legend Award and numerous other honors for her influence.

Reflection: Recognition Day

By Mary Alig Houston
Administrative Director, Mission and Spiritual Care

Be who you are and be that well.

-Saint Francis de Sales

Mary Alig HoustonHappy Recognition Day! On Jan. 24, we remember the 12 young women who professed their vows as Sisters in the Congregation of Bon Secours of Paris, on Jan. 24, 1824. We also celebrate each other as co-workers in the ministry of the Sisters of Bon Secours.

I think it is a lovely coincidence that Recognition Day is celebrated on the same day as the feast of Saint Francis de Sales. His quote is my prayer for each of you on Recognition Day, 2015: Be who you are and be that well!

Marvelously created, each of you is a gift to the patients, families and staff, who you encounter each day. Indeed, the Mission of the Sisters of Bon Secours is alive and flourishing because, together, we are a reflection of God's love for each person. It is through your innate goodness and the grace of God that we continue to advance the healing Mission to be good help to those in need.

Giving Patients the
Fast Care They Need

Our good help has never been confined by hospital walls. Now our patients have a convenient new way to get help for minor medical issues: their neighborhood supermarket.

The Bon Secours FastCare clinic is open in the Martin's grocery story in the Charter Colony shopping center in Midlothian. Another is scheduled to open on Hull Street in Richmond.

FastCare offers basic lab work and treatments and services including blood pressure checks, screenings and immunizations.

Phillip Masterson FastCare is overseen by Nurse Practitioner Philip Masterson, who is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner. He is also a Certified Health Fitness Specialist from the American College of Sports Medicine.

In Our Own Words

The following is a periodic Good News feature highlighting employees and leaders in their own words. If you know an employee to feature, please let us know.

"I think we learn to put others first as we serve those who really, really need our help. Our attention to detail and communication with our patients and community will play an important role with those we serve. Bon Secours as a whole gives us a chance to hone in on those who need the most help. We can heal mind, body and spirit of those less fortunate.

"We not only provide help to those who come to us, but we reach out to the neighborhoods to help those who are in need. And if there's something beyond the call of our regular duty to help a patient, or community we're going to do it. In our mission and service we strive to transform hurt into hope."
