Tips for Teaching Scissors Skills
Learning how to use scissors plays an important role in developing the fine motor skills young children need in order to hold pencils and crayons. Having strong fine motor skills will help children as they begin the tricky process of learning how to write. It might sound easy, but  teaching young children how to cut with scissors is a very complex task.

Time to Check Immunizations
Lunch kit - check!  Water bottle - check! Indoor shoes - check! Immunizations...?

Whether your kids are going back to school, going to child care or just getting back into fall routine, now is the perfect time to make sure their immunizations are up to date.

The timing of immunizations is important.  B.C's routine vaccination schedules identify key times for vaccinations and boosters. There are schedules for infants and pre-schoolers, for school-age children and for adults.

Vaccines are the best way to protect children against serious and sometimes fatal diseases. Vaccines, even combined doses, are safe and side effects are only minor, if any. It's much safer to get the vaccine than to get the disease.

If you need another reason to add "check immunizations" to your to do list -   recent increases in pertussis cases  in our region means that your child may be at risk if not fully immunized.

Pertussis is a serious infection of the lungs and throat. It spreads easily from person to person and can cause pneumonia, seizures, brain damage or death. Pertussis occurs in people of all ages but young children who have not been immunized get sicker than older children and adults.  Those most at risk of severe disease are children less than one year of age, children with a chronic health condition, or pregnant women in their third trimester.

More information on pertussis is available at HealthLinkBC.

Time is running out on this opportunity for parents, grandparents, ECE workers, child care providers and service providers to explore ideas to encourage and enhance the development of children from birth to age 6.

Topics being presented are:
Fathering; Looking Forward, Acting Now
Simon Nuttgens
Effective parenting begins with the end in mind: how do I want my child(ren) to turn out? What sort of person do I want my little one, or little ones, to become? As a father you will play a key role in determining this outcome! It is hoped that through attending this presentation fathers, and those who support fathers, will gain new perspectives and practical ideas for how to reach "the end" they have in mind.

Resistance & Tantrums
Vanessa Lapointe
Why is it that our children can so resist our direction? Why is it that sometimes the simplest request can lead to meltdowns and angry tears? Perhaps surprisingly, the answers to these questions have nothing to do with discipline strategies and "parenting" techniques. In this workshop we will discuss ways of understanding and responding to our children's resistance and upset that do not make the situation worse, but instead have us leading the way for our children to grow and develop.

When the Worry Monster Attacks: Supporting Children Struggling with Anxiety
Vanessa Lapointe
This workshop aims to provide a framework for those who are working to support and nurture a child who is struggling with anxiety. Anxiety comes in many shapes and sizes, and manifests differently for younger children than it does for older children and adults. Participants will learn about the different forms of anxiety, and how to best support the child feeling overwhelmed by worry.
