OHHN Proposes State Lead Task Force to Ohio Lead Advisory Committee (OLAC)

With the recent media focus on lead poisoning in Ohio and the nation, and the Find It, Fix It, Fund It campaign announced by the National Center on Healthy Housing (see below), it's an excellent time to strengthen Ohio's lead poisoning prevention efforts.

At the quarterly meeting of the Ohio Lead Advisory Committee (OLAC) on May 26, OHHN proposed the creation of a statewide task force, appointed by the Governor, on the prevention of lead poisoning. Such a task force would be similar to one in 2000-2001 that led to major revisions in Ohio's current lead law. OHHN will develop a proposal for the Lead Task Force for the next OLAC meeting on August 25 and solicit member and stakeholder input. The final product will be sent to OLAC members for comment prior to the August meeting.

At an OLAC meeting in late 2015 , OHHN expressed interest in having the Ohio Department of Health 1) conduct a study on the economic impact of lead poisoning in Ohio; and 2) undertake a 4-county demonstration project to improve the Medicaid lead testing rate for children receiving Medicaid at 12 and 24 months of age. The ideas were discussed at the May 26 meeting and additional information requested. OHHN will develop a scope of services for the economic impact study and provide additional information on the demonstration project.
OHHN Board Member Recognized for Healthy Homes Education Project

OHHN board member Rosemary Valdes Chaudry and her colleagues Barbara Polivka and John (Mac) Crawford were recognized recently by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for their project that used the Healthy Homes 7-step assessment framework to teach undergraduate and graduate pre-licensure nursing students about home environmental assessment. The project was selected as an Outstanding Project by a team of independent reviewers from among 51 mini- and general grants from 2010-2015.

The project, which was funded by Ohio EPA's Ohio Environmental Education Fund (OEEF), included online content modules, construction of a simulated 4-room apartment loaded with environmental hazards, and nursing students working in pairs to do the Healthy Homes assessment of the apartment with a faculty member  playing the role of a mother of a child with asthma whose family lived in the apartment. Rosemary Chaudry, Barbara Polivka and Mac Crawford had an article published about the project in a 2012 issue of the Journal of Nursing Education.

Find It, Fix It, Fund It

The National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) and the National Safe and Healthy Housing Coalition (Coalition) recently announced Find It, Fix It, Fund It, an action drive that urges Congress and the Administration to develop and implement a bold, comprehensive national plan to eliminate lead paint hazards and replace lead pipes.

NCHH and the Coalition are leading efforts to promote funding and new policies for lead poisoning prevention in homes, as well as the re-establishment of a federal cross-agency commission or task force on lead poisoning. They support allied efforts to replace lead water pipes and promote needed services for children impacted by lead.
