This year, can you think of any better way to celebrate a graduation, the end of school, or life in general than by contributing to the well-being of Nepal's children?

Consider giving again to Nepal Youth Foundation or Save the Children.  And we add Room to Read, which started as Books for Nepal 15 years ago.

Many of you thanked GG for suggestions on how to help Nepal in late April.   Here's a sampling:

Thanks for the links.  It was a pleasure to send a donation, especially as a Global Granny!  Turi James, Gig Harbor, WA.

Thanks so much for the good choices for donations to Nepal.  I just sent a good donation to Save the Children.  Marcia Capparela, Santa Monica, CA.

Thank you for this important message and an easy way to help the children of NEPAL. I forwarded this message to about 50 of my friends. Pray for Olga's Nepal Youth Foundation and relief in Nepal.  Marlynn Kaake, Alameda, CA.

For a brief report on what your donations are doing and why more are needed, read on.

Nepal Youth Foundation.  "We are rapidly expanding Day Care Centers for earthquake affected children in the worst hit areas in Kathmandu Valley. Eight centers are already running in full swing benefiting over 600 children between the ages of 2 to 12 years. We are working on running a total of 20 centers in the next few days. Children are provided with education, recreation, nutrition and psychological counseling at these centers. With more than 80% of schools damaged by the earthquake in the worst hit areas, it is uncertain how long it will take for over 1 million children to be able to go back to school." Trafficking.   In the desperate times following the quake some parents are taking extreme measures.  These lively three brothers were children trafficked rescued by Kathmandu police from an escort in a bus bound for India.  Their 72-year old father had given them up to traffickers.  Their mother had been killed April 25th when the shelter they were renting collapsed.  The authorities brought them to NYF for care until more permanent arrangements can be made. Your donations allow that kind of support to take place. (NYF Facebook account, June 2.)

Save the Children.  Internationally-renowned Save the Children can be counted on to intervene wherever children are in desperate circumstances.
Its Nepal team leader writes: "More than 32,000 classroom have been completely destroyed and an additional 15,000 badly damaged.  Our teams are working with communities across Nepal to build Temporary Learning Centers, simple structures made from tarps and local materials like bamboo.  Temporary Learning Space

With the help of community volunteers, we have already established 32 Temporary Learning Centers and will build a further 670 in the coming months.  We're also providing the schools and children with kits to ensure they have all the supplies they need to have a productive year." (Save the Children blog entry, May 31.)  Click here to donate to Save the Children's fund for Nepal.

Room to Read.  While Room to Read's focus is education and not emergency relief, special help is needed.because schools which partner with Room to Read have suffered serious damage.  In many instances Room to Read's constructed classrooms and libraries are the only buildings left at these schools. Ten of the 56 districts where Room to Read provides programs have significant damage and, in at least one district, 80 % of the schools are too damaged to be reopened.  Room to Read is also working with the Ministry of Education to distribute over 500,000 copies of learning materials.  Click here to donate to Room to Read's fund for Nepal.

Thank you for investing your time and dollars to help children everywhere, especially in Nepal right now.  May your summer, and the summer for children everywhere, be one of respite and rejuvenation!
