Second, holiday gifting offers special opportunities for involving children, but you may need to start now.  Here's an idea from GGer Margie Guggenhime -- Adopt a Family, in San Rafael, California.

Margie put this plan into operation just about this time last year.  With a little research, you'll likely find a similar program near you.

"We gave Adopt a Family of Marin a call early in November (415-456-7805) to let them know of our interest.  We were given the first names of our family, in our case, a disabled father, his mother, and an 8 year old boy and 10 year old girl. They also gave us a list of things the family members would like, and said we could give as much or as little as we could handle.

green-wrapped-present.jpg My grandsons were excited to be able to shop for actual gifts, as giving money to far-away entities seemed less personal for them.  We had to have a bit of a discussion about shopping for "others" and not ourselves, but it went quite nicely, for the most part. They also picked out wrapping paper and ribbon.

On another day, we got together and wrapped all the presents (quite a few!).  A couple of days later (about the second week in Dec., I think) we all delivered them to the drop-off point.  After Christmas, the family sent a nice hand-written thank-you note (still anonymous).

All in all, it was a very lovely way to involve ourselves in some sharing close to home at Christmas.  It was not inexpensive, but I think I'll amortize it over my year's giving.

I hope this might be a helpful idea for other grandmothers.  We'll definitely be doing it again next year.

Sincerely,
Margie"

In this month of gratitude, I am especially thankful for all of you who, like Margie, have decided to join us in giving.
