Are you ready to put your feet up, take a deep breath, and immerse yourself in a leisurely summer book?  I love the sense of timeless relaxation as you turn that page and journey to a different world.

But what if you opened that book to a script that was unfamiliar?  There were beautiful pictures, and clearly an entrancing story, but it wasn't in a language you recognized!

Every day kids in the developing world face that frustration and are locked out of the joy of reading.  If there's a book, it's in English.

"Young readers' best chance for success

comes when they learn to read in the same language as they speak at home."

So Room to Read, one of GG's recommended charities, started publishing children's books -  in 10 African and Asian countries.  Now children can enjoy 1000 books in 28 languages, written by native speakers and illustrators!

Watch as Room to Read's publishing director Alisha Berger describes the development of children's books for a global audience.

Wishing you much happy reading this summer - and many other relaxing delights.  Thank you for sharing the gift of literacy with others.
