Mary, at 92, is likely our oldest GG'er.

Greetings!

Have you recently been
doing some traveling outside your home country and come home with a little extra foreign currency?

Consider donating
that extra to UNICEF's Change for Good Program.
That's what I'm planning to do after the wonderful trip you see pictured on the right.

Change for Good is a partnership between UNICEF and several international airlines.  Passengers on participating airlines can donate any currency or change on home-bound international flights to UNICEF, or you can send it to:

U.S. Fund for UNICEF
ATTN: Change for Good Program
125 Maiden Lane
New York, NY 10038

In 2012 Change for Good raised more than $ 1 million dollars for UNICEF.

If you want to make sure your money is being well-spent, take a look at the 2012 Annual Report of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF released July 15.  I read it and was awe-inspired by the efforts of this huge organization:
  • In the crisis resulting from the Syrian civil war, UNICEF helped provide uninterrupted access to education for nearly 80,000 children, supported measles vaccination for more than 1.4 million children, and provided psychosocial care for an estimated 47,000 children.  This was only one of the 286 crises in 79 countries to which UNICEF responded in 2012.
  • UNICEF continues as the world largest provider of vaccines to developing countries.  It assisted India in immunizing 170 million children against polio.  In January 2012 India announced it was polio free after a year without a single case.
  • In June 2012 UNICEF announced the goal of ending preventable child deaths by 2035 and it has since been joined by 162 governments.  The worldwide number of deaths of children under 5 has dropped by 41% since 1990, and is now at 19,000 per day.  The tragedy of this number is still overwhelming, but UNICEF is taking aim at it.

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who was shot in October on her way to school, spoke at the United Nations on July 12, her 16th birthday, in support of education.  To me her commitment to an educated life despite unbelievable adversity captures what UNICEF supports.

Your donations to UNICEF help realize Malala's aspirations for herself and millions of others.

And it's one more way of showing gratitude for the education we, our children and grandchildren have enjoyed.

Sincerely,

Diana McDonough
