Greetings!
How to involve grandchildren in charitable giving is a puzzler. Like me, you've probably found the answer varies based on age, sex, and that special uniqueness that characterizes each of us -- children and adults alike! The holidays offer a good time to try, and Thanksgiving the ideal starting point. But how to do it?
Last year on Thanksgiving I handed out a "Global Gift List" to each of my grandchildren. It included -
- Motivating facts on global need. It let them know that 1.4 billion people in the world are very poor, living on $1.25 per day.
- An explanation of linking gift-giving and charitable giving. It told them we wanted to give each grandchild a gift and, in honor of each of them, also give a gift to a needy child.
- A request for their input. We asked for their input on where we should make that charitable donation.
- Their wish list. Of course, we asked what gift each of them might like.
Click here for your copy of the Global Gift List. At our family gift exchange in December, at the top of each grandchild's present I attached information about the charitable gift we made based on their instructions. The kids - and their parents - loved it. Very best wishes for a marvelous Thanksgiving -- and for good global giving! Diana McDonough President Global Grandmothers
