Editor's note. Global Grandmothers president, Diana McDonough, lost her dear husband Pat to cancer on July 20, 2012. The GG family extends its deepest sympathy to Diana in this difficult period. Recognizing Diana's need for respite, GG board members will rotate as Global Gram authors this fall.  Below is the first of our "guest grams."

Greetings!

Sandwiched between the political conventions and 9/11, I discovered Grandparents Day - September 9th.  Checking for online resources, I found a delightful jewel- www.grandparentsday.org - where I was invited to "Do Something Grand" to celebrate Grandparents Day.   This call to action suggested that, as a grandparent, I could share my wisdom, perspective, and civic values with my grandchildren or other youth. I really like the notion of doing something grand!   I've been considering how I can do something grand from the Global Grandmother perspective - and I have some ideas.   - My grandchildren and I will be baking cookies to include in bag lunches for the homeless and for the local teen center.
 - Perhaps I can teach them to cut out quilting squares because I'll be sewing quilts to send to refugees through our church.
 - Maybe we can simply take a walk together and reflect on the abundance we enjoy as we savor these last days of summer.

Check out www.grandparentsday.org and have fun thinking about their invitation to do something grand! And while you are at it, have a fantastic Grandparents Day.   Sandy Piotter Secretary Global Grandmothers
