A Special Guest

Thank you to  Katie Trimm and Ashley Lall from Grovetown High School for choosing the Burn Foundation as  their charity for their National Honors Society project. They were able to involve fellow classmates and their community in collecting donations to benefit our JMS burn patients and their families. Good work ladies!

Caring by the Numbers

Thanks so much to the kids in the eight county school systems that were part of our Can-it! can-paign. They collected over 350,000 cans which amounted to $6,200 for the Pediatric Burn Fund.

Burn Prevention Tip

Place your tree at least 3 feet away from a heat source such as fireplace or candles. When buying a live Christmas tree, choose one that is fresh and green. Give the trunk a fresh cut and keep the tree stand filled with water so the tree stays green longer.

Calling All Storytellers

As we prepare for the Burn Foundation's  silver anniversary, we are looking for information about people who shaped our history. Please contact us if you have a story to share.

December 2012

Greetings!

Feeling the pressure of finding the right gift for a neighbor or co-worker?  You wander the aisles staring at bacon-flavored candy canes and holiday clocks that sing.  There is so little time to bake and last year's fudge was a disaster.  Have you considered a tax-deductible gift to Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation in honor of a hard-to-buy-for friend?    No shopping, no wrapping, no re-gifting.  Just click the Donate Button, or mail your donation with the name and mailing address of the honoree to us and we will send a holiday note telling them that you celebrated your friendship through a gift of charity.  Your gift will help patients and families who are facing a different kind of holiday season.  Who knows?  Maybe your friends will get in the spirit and next year you will not be re-gifting that Christmas Story Leg Lamp they gave you.

Elvis is in the house.
Where can you see Elvis and Forrest Gump on the same stage?  You could have at the Burn Foundation's 2012 Burn Survivors Reunion.  Approximately 300 burn survivors, family members, Burn Center staff, and volunteers gathered outside the Joseph M. Still Burn Center for  a day filled with fellowship and fun.  There was a chili cook-off between some competitive first responders, face painting for the children, tours of the new Burn Center, and a balloon release. The JMS staff provided entertainment which included clogging by Beretta Coffman and daughter Kinnley, a flash mob dance and, who could forget, a duet by none other than Elvis and Forrest Gump.  It was one of those rare days filled with nothing but smiles, love and laughter.  The Burn Survivors Reunion was a time for patients and families to celebrate their survival and reconnect with their healthcare staff.  The Burn Foundation was fortunate to host this  joyous celebration of life and triumph.

A Labor of Love

We are pleased to welcome Laura Brown, our new Patient-Family Liaison.  She attended Georgia College and State University and is currently working on her degree in Social Work.   Originally from Americus, Georgia, Laura has called Augusta home for the last five years while working as a Customer Service Supervisor for a telecommunication's company.  As a former JMS Burn Center patient, Laura is particularly sensitive to the needs of our patients and guests.  In 2011, Laura received a near fatal wasp sting which resulted in a three week stay at the Burn Center. "I give thanks every day for my health," says Laura.   She remembers how important it was to have her family nearby.  In her spare time, she enjoys giving guitar lessons, volunteering at a soup kitchen, and reading.  We are glad that Laura's journey back to health brought her to our door.

Granted, We Are Grateful
Recently, the Burn Foundation received several grants for Project Sojourner.  We are deeply grateful to our friends at the Knox Foundation, Georgia Power Foundation, and Publix Supermarket Charities.  We will be able to refurbish four more guest rooms because of their generous support.

Angels Unawares

Hospitality is at the heart of the Burn Foundation's mission and we are sometimes reminded of the Biblical verse, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares" (Hebrews 13:2).  This was the case when Mr. Philip Guyton of Florence, SC, checked into the Chavis House.  He and his wife were our guests for several weeks while his step-son recovered at the Burn Center.  They were so grateful to stay at the Burn Foundation's guest house that he offered his "handyman" services.  Almost daily, he dropped by to ask if he could fix a leaky faucet or a misaligned door.  Indeed, sometimes we do entertain angels.

From the Heart...

Everyone celebrates the holiday season with different traditions.  For some of us, the holidays include a little eggnog (leaded or unleaded), some last minute shopping and probably a piece of Aunt Mert's fruitcake because you have never had the nerve to tell her that you hate fruitcake.   The Round Hill Fire Department in Lexington, SC, has made decorating the Burn Foundation's Chavis House one of their traditions.  Not only do these volunteers honor the memory of a fellow firefighter, Jeffrey Vaden Chavis, they make the season a little brighter for families who are staying with us during the holidays.  Bryan and Polly Rawl, Linda and Vaden Chavis and the rest of the Round Hill gang are special people.  Helping others and sharing love - that's what Christmas is all about.

The Staff and I wish you a Merry Christmas!
